On the final stint, even though LEC was on harder compound he still had more deg than Norris, who got faster as the time went even on a softer compound. Unless the tires are graining due to the cold temperatures I would expect the harder compound to at least have better deg even if it is a second off the pace. Unless the C1 is just unreasonably terrible (it is Pirelli so who knows) that does not explain all of the gap. If NOR and LEC started on the grid together, NOR would be at least 30s up the road by the end

Not everything needs an immediate reaction, let's wait for telemetry.. Lec also did 4 extra laps compared to Lando (extra fuel load?). Ferrari are known to mess with engine modes from stint to stint during testing

Seems McLaren has 0.3-0.4s in this sim accounting fo C2/ C1 delta.
If confirmed in the actual race it would be a huge gap. In that case we’ll need something like a RB 2024 disasterclass

Yeah Like Mercedes and Redbull aren’t strong as well. McLaren are the least of Ferrari’s problems.

Rumor has it that on the last day of testing both drivers will also try a set-up of the car in the Melbourne configuration ... is it or is it not useful to do this, generally speaking from a testing perspective and in particular for this circuit configuration which has similar stop and go characteristics as the one in Australia?

The interesting bit today is the whole race sim, not a single push lap. It carries a bit more weight? But yes, let’s wait and see it’s too early for sure

A direct race sim comparison is not just some single fast lap nonsense. Come on now.

It's not looking great. Not for Ferrari nor anybody else, honestly. There is no reason this season had to be super close. We might have hoped it would be and that Ferrari would make an especially large leap, but catching Mclaren who were already reasonably faster than us was always going to be difficult.

Basically people now just have to hope there was some extraneous circumstances that invalidate this race sim as representative, but Mclaren being fastest this year was always the most likely situation, so dismissing some pretty decent evidence that yes, they are fastest, doesn't make much sense.

There's no time this season to make up any sizeable difference. They had to start either matching Mclaren or being super close by the start or it was basically over. Ferrari would just be hurting themselves trying to push over the course of 2025 at the cost of the 2026 regulations. All while Mclaren could probably still have enough cushion to win without having to compromise too much of 2026 themselves.

If we take the times at face value, it's more like 5+ tenths a lap over the course of the whole thing. While we may not really be that far off, it would require one quite hobbled race sim if we were actually anywhere close, either.

Pretty grim.

It seems like Leclerc was derating at the end of some of the straights for most of the laps, suggesting a conservative engine mode. If you trust the telemetry though, adding up the losses of that derating at the end of the straights does not make up more than 2 tenths of laptime.

Meanwhile Merc is publicly saying they don’t know if they fixed their “only good in low temps” issues.

It’s testing, in conditions that maybe they see 3-4x a year. Relax.
