If my memory serves me correct, this is Button's tenth season in F1, which is more than most ever do, to my mind without ever xactly thrashing his team-mate?

This year he had a car which was aerodynamically leaps ahead of enyone elses due to a loophole in the regs. Together with the best engine, the results were only to xpect if you ask me. Competition has now caught up and on a track such as Suzuka they were midfield, also to xpect from a comparatively small team.

To my mind - and I might be completely wrong - I think Brawn set about the 2010 car a long time ago and has only a small team still working on this year, hence the rate of development. They knew they had a 1.5sec lead on the field from the off.

What is worrying is how the development they did do completely messed up the car (for Button more the Rubens). Without that period the WCC/WDC would have been finished a few races ago. They can't spend Β£1/2billion every year investigating multiple development paths and then picking the right one. Rate of development wise Force India and Williams have done a better job for a small team...but then they had faster cars to template...

If he ends up WDC do you think he'll care?

The truth is that Button would only need three additional points to become WDC had the Malaysian GP been one lap longer, and Brawn would be WCC by now. Odds are he'll become the first driver since Alonso in 2005 to become champion with spare races. And the truth is that the WDC is won by the best car-driver combination that year. It simply can't be separated.

Come on, Button is a very talented driver. Not the best? That's very likely, but not the worst by far either. It's not like if I won the WDC.
I am not amazed by F1 cars in Monaco. I want to see them driving in the A8 highway: Variable radius corners, negative banking, and extreme narrowings that Tilke has never dreamed off. Oh, yes, and "beautiful" weather tops it all.

it seems to me that people who run F1 teams know a lot more about drivers than we who post here
ten years in F1 ...what does that tell you about his ability .. he must be rated as one of the best by those that know

even ross brawn has admitted that he made a big mistake when at ferrari not pushing to sign button

face the fact , if he didn't have the ability he would have been long gone

If he won the last 6 races on the bounce then nobody would deny that he deserved it. It is a team sport, his team got him a car tat was a winner.

But that's just it. In the start of the season he had no problem racking up a lot of wins when his car was 1.5 seconds faster than anyone else. Now that his car is on par or slightly better than most of the field he is struggling to pick up points at each race. Yes I think his driving style is excellent be he lacks outright speed in my mind as he is unable to match other drivers performances for the past few months. Look at vettel when he is a track the RB5 suits. Its not like he just wins, he literally DOMINATES. In the wet Vettel still dominates despite what car is under him. In the end I can say all I want but I will accept Button as champion since he has not made one driver error all year and that does count for something. I just think it will be a lot more interesting if some of the bad engine and mechanical luck Vettel has had manifests in the Brawns making the last race nail biting.

Patrese got a shot with a winning Williams 14 years after his debut. How about Martin Brundle and Andrea de Cesaris?

Thing is, if your only driving the car at 98%, while the rest are at 99.5%, would you not be expected to make less mistakes?

Yes - but if you only need to drive at 98% to win why chance a DNF. As ALain Prost said "Without going to what I think is my limit. I always say that my ideal is to get pole with the minimum effort, and to win the race at the slowest speed possible."

Vettel is just like Button.. or slightly worse.. at least Button can overtake.. Vettel only wins when he has a car that is 1 second faster and a pole position..
