I don't think it is a stupid thread. I'm not a Heidfeld fan exactly but I do notice that he is under rated regarding his race craft. Contrary to a lot of other guys he is very good at passing and produces very few crashes. He brings the car home and given a chance like Button, Villeneuve or Hill would also bring the title home.
He isn't spectecular and his qualifying performance is definitely just average but in the races he outshined Kubica which is no small achievement.

I am wondering if he can do more for Mclaren than Heiki. Some say that if he had a better car he could challenge for a WDC. I think he could possibly play a support role in the Mclaren team, he always finishes in points when his car is quick enough and he always finishes. Plus he could be the german tha Haug is so desperately needs.
My concern is: Is he faster than Heiki and can he win in Mclaren next year?
I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, he has been racing for years, hasn't really been outstanding or brilliant but he gets the job done.
Nobby has found his German in Nico and he doesn't want him for McLaren, but for Brawn. I think he will stay out of the McLaren driver issue. But Heidfeld IMO would be a clever choice for McLaren.

Pics or ban!
This is what you meant right?
Before I do anything I ask myself “Would an idiot do that?” And if the answer is yes, I do not do that thing. - Dwight Schrute

Nick was driving for McLaren in their junior team (in Formula 3000) but they decided to hire Kimi as a replacement for Mika, not Nick.
I do not think between then and now he did something so extraordinary to change their perception of him.
Mclaren preferred Kimi instead of Nick for the 2002 season although he outperformed "rookie" Kimi during the 2001 season. We discussed similar things in Kubica under-rated topic too.
Somehow whatever he does, he can't shine and I believe situation is similar for many drivers in the grid too.
Nick,Button (despite the fact that he will probably win the WDC this year),Rubens,Webber,Jarno...they already spent too many years in the grid and their images are started to suffer. That's why, when a rookie or 2-3 years experienced driver raise the game and almost match their performance, their values fade.
I think nick at brawn would be an excellent fit ; maybe not quite as good as jens , but not far away imho ...
because their styles are quite similar I believe it would help in developing a car which would suit BOTH drivers ....as I see it brawn have gone off track this year by trying to develop the car to suit dissimilar drivers ; at the very least this would help win the constructors title for brawn next season
but there is a problem , rosberg won't want to go to big mac , he knows [ as does his dad ] that hammy will make him look very second rate for the moment ,he needs more time ; probably wouldn't fancy being up against vettel either , another precocious talent
schuey always had the advantage of a driver plus second driver system , most teams don't accept that degree of subservience and frankly the drivers who accept a support position know in their heart that they are unlikely to get to the top of the tree ; I have never forgotten the year eddie Irvine could have lost the world championship on a split tie had schuey allowed him to to win the last race of the season ; ok , he wouldn't have been champion , but something he would remember for the rest of his life ! of course , if schuey had been injured a race earlier eddied would have been champion that year as , yet again , the red machine was in a class of it's own ; I suppose schuey could have won the championship for eddie by punting off the opposition ...after all he won at least two of his own championships by doing that , did he not?
to the optimist a glass is half full ; to the pessimist a glass is half empty ; to the F1 engineer the glass is twice as big as it needs to be

And Ferrari took a liking to Massa after Nick out shined him at Sauber. Maybe the teams recognize that he just may not have that pure outright speed.
