The race pace was significantly worse than the qualifying pace would have suggested.

Alonso was within a tenth of pole, yet was much slower than Leclerc in the race.

AM/Alonso were fortunate that nobody behind them were much faster, really. A good job, but still lots of work to do if they want to be a more regular threat on Sundays.

It's not comparable. Alonso was on a 1 stop strategy and didnt push for most of the race. He knew Bortoleto couldn't pass him and he just had to get the tires to the end. He wouldn't have anticipated Leclerc's problems. By then it was too late to catch him. I suspect he could have troubled Leclerc with a bit less pace management.

Alonso had built up a 8 second gap to Bortoleto before letting him create back to 7, then pitting. So that's not really true.

He was managing but for a select few laps. In the first stint he dropped the hammer when he wanted, and the same in the 2nd. He started the 2nd stint slower than Max who had 18 laps older tires...Management.

Similar to the first stint, Alonso preserved his tyres at the beginning. With about 15 laps to go, he said to his engineer he thought of keeping Bortoleto close and in his DRS, in anticipation of Verstappen challenging him at the end with fresher tyres. Instead, Alonso decided to create as much distance between him and Bortoleto and drive nothing but qualifying laps.

Yeah he did, you need to bring the hard tires in slowly, Otherwise they go out on you. Your graph does change the fact that for more than 40 laps there was a huge gap in front and behind Alonso. He wasn't causing traffic and backing everyone up, which is the point I was making.

Yeah he did, you need to bring the hard tires in slowly, Otherwise they go out on you. Your graph does change the fact that for more than 40 laps there was a huge gap in front and behind Alonso. He wasn't causing traffic and backing everyone up, which is the point I was making.

He was backing everyone up until around lap 13. We saw it on the TV. It is not because he didn't have pace. It was just race management. He wasn't racing those in front. We've seen this from him dozens of times in the last few years. He only spends the energy required to secure his result.

On the other side it's pretty clear that he is saving so much tyres for later on because they simply have to. So what's the conclusion? The car is still pretty bad in races, because it is very hard on tyres. STR tyres were finished some laps earlier, who had to drive in the dirty air for a lot of laps.

Again, I can't see too much positive things yesterday. The race was perfectly executed by ALO/STR and the team, but it simply played in their hands that overtaking was nearly impossible. It's good for AMR that they are quite ok on such tracks in Q, when overtaking, undercutting/overcutting is hard.

Regarding the updates, just saw that they drove with the old sidepods in the race (and so I guess with the old floor because I believe that only "old-old" and "new-new" fits together).

i rewatched his onboard and team radio, and i can verify that from lap 53 onwards, Alonso was indeed pushing and doing quali laps until the end.
He said it to his engineer himself "its quali laps from me till the end, tell me if it is otherwise" or something like that.

After that radio msg on lap 53, Alonso dropped from low 1.21s to low 1.20s started going 1s faster from what he was doing the laps before.
While brining in and stabilizing the hards, he thought of using Bortoleto (giving him drs) to defend against max if needed, but he abandoned this idea early and said to his engineer he will start pushing and see if bortoleto can keep up with wim. That happened at lap 53. From then on, it was pushing till the end for Alonso.

I don't have a link. I rewatched the final 20 laps of his onboard on f1-tv.
I have a tablet with his onboard camera feed and a Bluetooth earphone listening on his team radio during the race, but with all that is going on i may miss something that he said during the race.

When i watch F1 i have the live f1-tv broadcast on my tv, a tablet with (usually) Alonso's (or other driver of interest) onboard camera and a earphone to listen his team radio, and another tablet with live timing from the live timing app in order to follow what it is actually going on in the race with all the drivers. Lap times, Strategies, gaps, threats etc.

There used to be some people that where gathering all the team radio communication of a driver and make youtube videos with it, and it used to be free for everyone to listen, but i don't know if that is still happening or if it's free.

Try googling or searching in youtube for it.
