If that is true McLaren offered Kimi relatively small salary because he got money from Ferrari I find such a behavior at least inappropriate. It’s like Schumi did not got any money from Ferrari in the past because he had personal sponsors. Kimi is one of the best drivers on the grid (even Whitmarsh admitted that), former world champion and thus his value is high, for me higher than 5 mln which appeared in the news. It is not McLaren business how much Kimi would get from Ferrari, if they want his services they have to pay fair price.

I can not agree with Kimi being lazy in the second part of 2008. He was pushing up to the point where there was a chance to get a title (I think Spa was a good example, battle between him and Lewis was on of the brightest moments of the season.). He made mistakes but when you are on the edge they are almost unavoidable. After few races with low scores, not always due his faults (France – broken exhaust, UK – wrong tire choice, Canada – Lewis parking his car in the back of Kimi’s Ferrari...) he had no choice but to push. Once his chances for a crown evaporated he was driving for the team. It may not look very impressive but at least it helped Ferrari to score constructors’ championship and Felippe being very close to become a world champion.

It impressed Ferrari enough to ask Alonso to drive. That is indisputable. Part of this may be the sponsorship Alonso brings but there must be something else to take such a drastic step.

we do not know exact reasons why Alonso replaced Kimi and probably we would never know but I am almost certain more than 2 factors (Kimi's results and Santanader's money) influenced this decision. I bet it may be more related with the off-track value/image of Alonso and how does it fit into long term plan of the red team.

About the Button/Brawn saga.

I think Jenson, being really in the afternoon, if not twilight, of his career, should hop off over to McLaren. It just seems like RB is making light of his achievements. He's the world champ now, probably wont be again (no offense), and should therefore make the best of his current situation. As for going out to get his own sponsorship, I find that a massive kick in the teeth, seeing as it's something he would have done anyway. The situation kind of reminds me of Hill's in '96 when Frank reckoned any monkey could win the championship in one of his motors. Jenson's been through thick and thin with the team. Isn't it time they showed him the same loyalty/respect he showed them?

[Mod. you have my expressed permission to boot this over to the fanboy thread, should you so wish :P ]

On the Kimi-to-McLaren issue, I must ask one obvious (?) question: If Ferrari are willing to pay Kimi NOT to drive for them, then why would McLaren be interested in PAYING Kimi to drive for them? Especially considering that McLaren has the better car at the moment, I find it a little bit strange that they would be interested in a driver that was refused and even sacked by another team. Any ideas?

Pretty sure Frank was proven right the following year..

Brawn, and Jense, both know that JB won't have a chance of the championship at McLaren up against a superior Lewis. Jenson is established as the #1 driver at Brawn, and this is his best chance at 2010 glory - that's why he wants to stay.

Brawn probably don't care that much about JB staying if Nico is coming.

Does raise an interesting situation tho.. if JB leaves, Brawn need 2 new drivers - Nico & who? Heidfeld..?

Kimi is just a driver, a real quick one, but he has proven more than once that he is a robot and that just doesn't fit with the fire of Ferrari. Massa even said that he has tried more than once to open up to him, and he just shuts him and most everyone out.

This is the reason why I think Kimi was shown the door a year early. I haven't even seen Fernando in a red suit, but I already think it will fit him better.

Teammates don't have to like each other or be friends, but it helps the team a lot if there is friendly competition between drivers.

And Mclaren wants the two best drivers that they can get. That is why we have seen Alesi/Senna, Hamilton/Alonso, JPM/Kimi, maybe Hamilton/Kimi, Mika/DC. Well maybe DC was the odd one out, but still a pretty obvious trend that they stand behind. There would be fewer more potent combos than Lewis/Kimi.

With Heinz??? Your memory fails you. And if you're referring to Jacqui, remember he replaced DC.

 He had 2 monkeys in 96, and proved over 2yrs any monkey could win the championship in his cars.
After all these years my mind still isn't made up about HHF.. i still think he mismanaged his career - should have done better than he did. maybe i'm deluded on that front tho :?

wait.. what?
you mean Berger/Senna?

I'm guessing the Kimi/McLaren issue is sponsorship commitments again. a shame, you're right, (up with Alonso/Massa) it'd be the most potent combo in F1 otherwise.

Still the same old game of using media reports as negotiation tools.
