Well this isnt too much of a surprise in these regulations and these cars if we think about it deeper. There’s basically no such thing as high speed corners, not only because all corners became way slower this year due to downforce, but also because drivers have been forced to under drive in those, a computer program does most of the job for them harvesting energy in those high speed zones, drivers cannot push their cars fully to their limit and showcase the difference between them. Already last year we saw quite clear signs on segeral occasions Kimi was faster than George in low speed corners. George would often be faster in high speed, high speed braking zones and so on, to even things out, or even maintain his advantage on most normal tracks full of such zones.
So this year low and medium speed corners is all that’s left for drivers to make a difference. And of course naturally in race trim every corner becomes even slower, much slower, which also benefits Kimi, which is why he definitely looks more competitive vs Russell in race trim vs Quali trim where they’ve been still equal this year, given Russell technical issues in China (which we should discount), it’s a draw, 3-3 at the moment head to head score-wise.

What a strategic error by Mercedes, Jesus…

I always make fun of Ferrari because they often look like clowns when it comes to strategy, but this time we deserve the award  —and we got instant karma  .

It’s ridiculous to make such a mistake at this level. Why put all our eggs in one basket? Were we really that confident that we had the fastest package and decided to let both our drivers fight each other on track in Barcelona?

I’m honestly struggling to find an explanation. We put GR in traffic and KA behind Sir LH…

Can someone enlighten me, please?

No one expected HAM to go that fast on the medium tire. No one expected a perfectly fortunate VSC. No one expected the Ferrari to pull the fastest lap on the hard tire. Even then, it appeared HAM had enough to squeak out a win because RUS third stint wasn't that amazing. Letting your drivers race each other has become de rigueur, "for the show."

Can't win them all.

That means they have to grant McLaren and Redbull too. This is going to get messy fast.

F1 keeps one-upping itself on the absurdities. I’m actually kind of impressed.

It would be stupid to get the whole race annulled over this. Mercedes has the most to lose so it's the right thing to do.

Nothing would be annulled, Merc would simply lose the appeal. Penalties served in race can't be overturned, and Russell served that penalty incorrectly which is a penalty in itself.

Mark Hughes: Upcoming Ferrari engine upgrades could decide F1 title
Was the Ferrari faster than the Mercedes at Barcelona? It wasn’t clear on race day because of the differences in their strategies and tyre choices.

But the fact that Hamilton qualified within 0.064s of George Russell’s pole around arguably F1’s most technically demanding circuit tells us that the SF-26, with its latest upgrades, is absolutely on the pace despite its power shortfall to Mercedes.
...
If they make improvements on the engine side…

The strong rumour is there is a significant power unit upgrade coming at the next race in Austria, with a further one scheduled for Zandvoort/Monza time, perhaps with a bigger turbo.

Ferrari believes the latter will give it power parity with the current Mercedes power unit.

However, ADUO has offered Mercedes the opportunity of a single upgrade this year.

Mercedes did not plan its power unit development around the assumption of an upgrade opportunity whereas Ferrari clearly did, if it can produce an update as soon as Austria.

So whether any Mercedes' upgrade can be made in time and whether it will be potent enough to overcome the effectiveness of the Ferrari’s aerodynamics will likely determine the shape of the mid-latter part of the season.

But suddenly, Ferrari is looking like such a formidable package that with so many races to go, the 41 points between Kimi Antonelli and Hamilton doesn’t look unbridgeable.

This seems like a bit of an oversight no? Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
