Sector 15 has a single yellow flag at 17:00:23, which becomes double (aka lap invalidated) at 17:00:45. It's possible Russell passed through Sector 15 in that gap of 22s, lifting enough to keep his time.
Sky said that Antonelli was ahead of Russel at the track had double yellows and aborted the lap,so how Russel gets there and its single? Its confusing.

Georgie boy struggling. Mental blow again by the italian teen.
Yeah, but he built mental strengh for Q3 and also profited from luck(my guess is that Antonelli would have gotten pole if it wasn´t for Max´s "heroic act")

Charles finally gets a tiny upper hand after being on the back foot all weekend.
That was very cruel for you guys, wasn´t it? Leclerc looked weak all weekend giving further confidence for you guys after Leclerc´s disastrous previous GPs. Then, the "living the dream" got shattered, back to hard reality and normal service resumed. That´s tough

Sky saying via the FIA the in lap of George is being deleted not the pole lap. So the time stands.

Yes, why slow down when you can argue the toss with the stewards afterwards… The risk is a very dangerous car on car collision situation. Not good.

Remember 2018 Mexico GP when stewards tought Max had lifted because he had a yellow sector and didn't penalize him until he told them he didn't lift. I think this is a similar situation. But deleted laps is too suspicious,

Not the first time a Mercedes car set pole despite yellow flags.

Nothing to see here.

either Sky are wrong in saying Kimi got double yellow (Russell was behind yes), or it would a plain theft by Mercedes as double yellow means lap invalidated. As they decided so quickly, I tend to think it was a single yellow when Russell passed. Let's see in the next hours if further details emerge.

Ant on the Sky pad claims Antonelli got a double on the light panel but Russell got a single. Very strange. With that big crash it should have been a double, so insane luck if Russell happened to not get one.

So the replays the light panels looking solid yellow which is single.

The in lap with Kimi there was a diagonal yellow which is a double so looking like its lap stands.

Think the argument now is it should have been double yellows.

Was just going to reference that... 10 years to the day that the 2nd mercedes pulled tricks to secure pole after a crash and the #1 backed off

It was long time standard that by a single yellow no personal best is enough. But in a situation like this, (a) a single yello is questionable and (b) such a small lift is anyway not enough. And on a side note, with his hybrid engines the lap time loose from RUS in this situation is close to 0.

I still don't understand why a driver would throw the car into a corner knowing fully well that his car doesn't have the grip to hold on. It's unfortunate that the FIA doesn't want to implement the qualy crash rules they have in the junior formulae in F1. A driver shouldn't be able to hold on to his quickest qualy time if he ruins everyone else's lap with a completely avoidable crash.
