McLaren have a very simple solution to providing their wing enough stiffness with only one point of attachment to the actuator. That metal gurney flap doubles as a strike-plate that rests on top of the actuator arm to provide that additional support. Also, I believe that shield-shape with screws is actually a metal reinforcement plate that has been mostly painted over, with the gurney left exposed at the top. Pretty neat.

Mclaren has been using this gurney flap and the "shield" in the previous races when the car didn't have the macarena. I believe it is an aerodynamic feature. VCARB introduced their own version. I circled that in red below:
