So. Extra durable tyres for 2010?

Post

All compounds have changed from last year based on the feedback and data we gained last season as well as the rule changes for this season. The tyres are designed to be more durable for this season due to the heavier cars and different strategy options because of no more refuelling.

The first thing that came to my mind is effects of the harder compound with divers who are kind to the tyres, drivers like Jenson Button versus drivers who are supposedly hard on the tyres like Alonso/Hamilton and how these effects change as the race goes on (cars lighten up).

What do you guys think now that the tyres are definitely going to be harder?

Without a doubt they will run less tractive, lower wear tread compounds.

Lot more to durability than that though.

They published the profile of the front tyre in comparison with the old front tyre. You can see how much stiffer the new tyres are going to be. Spring rate is going to be much higher by the shorter and thicker side walls.

I think there are two sides of this, happening at the same time, the heavier car means higher load on the tires, why sidewalls will be stiffer as they are what is supporting the gravitational load. But then I guess there will be different demands on the tires on the first and last stint?

I am so happy to see the wide fronts go, those were to my mind an anomaly which came with the 1998 track change.

well in fact the added weight should help the cause in starting the race ,so to me the first third is dominated by the car limited by its pure weight and CG height.

qualy will see a different story .stiff carcass will make it even more delicate to get and maintain heat into the tyres ,so with the wrong attitude you will do harm to the tyre ,burning compound instead of working the carcass as we have already seen in 2009 .

with second stint you will see the softer compound on the cars but on a 1 stopper more vertical load + rubber laid ....so less of a problem -if you are not overcooking things.

so to me the Buttons will have to learn how to warmup their tyres and the Hamiltons
will need to calm down themselves in terms of letting the car dance too much when itยดs time to hold back, which is obviously something new to most of the drivers ...not to go full balls the whole race might give you a better end result....

At Macs this is a wonderful situation to have them both in the same car ....they will undoubtedly learn a lot of each other .
