By definition no path will be faster than the other if the two paths are on the main straight. If one path is faster, then the lead car is always welcome to take it. But a faster car being held up behind would never opt to take the same path.
As far as Button's comment, does he not remember pit lane exits? Any issue regarding merging can be resolved with a can of white paint.
Why is this idea being ridiculed? Do people LIKE seeing a faster car held up for entire stints with no possible attempt at passing? Arent 10 years of essentially 180mph parades and passing in the pits enough?
