But here is where it can be frustrating to be a Canadian with a strong dollar.

$145.09 CDN is what the formula1.com website wants to charge. $20 dollars more, "just because".

I'll send a USD money order or something I guess. This is the same BS that makes a UK F1 magazine $13 CDN and $9 USD, when our dollar is less than 1 nickel off.

It means if the magazine comes in on a ship in the St Lawrence from the UK, it's more expensive to buy it in Montreal, than it is in California, after it gets shipped by a truck to Arnie's doorstep.

How do you plan a trip to a Formula 1 race? Who do you call and where is there a good place to stay in Montreal that's not to expensive?

I found the prices on GrandPrix-tickets.com to be slightly better than the Formula1.com official site, but if you are paying in CDN dollars, the Formula1 site is a total rip off.

the sites I mentioned above have package deals as well. You can spend $5000+++ cdn just for tickets and pit access and such. Paupers like me just want general admission.

A travel agent could be your best friend in this instance. The return of Micheal Schumacher this year, plus the fact that Montreal race has just returned after a break from the calendar, should ensure a very busy place. It would be in your best interest to book early.

We are looking at staying in a Fairmont hotel there, and they have deals at the beginning of every month, but it is a swank hotel chain. I recently finished building one in Vancouver, 55 story, 15 million dollar penthouse, giant flat screen in every room, and not a square inch of the lobby that is not expensive slabs of decorative marble.

A friend of mine told me a few years back that McGill university in Montreal makes available some dorm rooms for the general public for a fee, since they're empty in the summer time anyway. I think he was saying it's something like 30 dollars per person per night.
Does anyone know if this is still the case this year?

That is a pretty standard thing for schools to do in Canada. A friend and I drove from Vancouver to Ottawa and stayed at dorm rooms when we were in a city where we didn't have friends to stay with. Worth checking into for sure.

We actually got the room for $20 for both of us, and by the end of the night after the bar, we had moved to two rooms as there was now 4 of us, as no rooms were locked Thunder Bay, easy pickings if you are not a local. We were the only ones there, and got had the whole floor to ourselves. We actually ordered martinis in the redneck bar, just to see what would happen. The glasses had not been used for long enough they were all dusty.

5 bucks a head, not too shabby, and since I never had my own University experience, I was able to compress the whole drinking, dorm, and random encounter thing into one evening.

I have a call in to the summer dorm reservation line to see right now. I am getting my ticket today for general admission. Hotels are all filled up. I might end up staying in Hawksville and commuting in, there is no camping at the track.

I'll post later what I find out.

Booked tickets as soon as they went on sale, right on turn 6. This'll be my first time at a grand prix. Stoked as hell. I've got relatives in Pierrefonds, so I am lucky enough to be able to avoid the hotels.

about 60 bucks per day per room (and one can squeeze a few people in there) is not bad, considering I would probably spend the entire day at the park.

I'm doing general admission as well. Peter Windsor had a write up on selecting a good spot for races, before he turned into a total toolbox, and suggested anywhere you can see the cars coming from a distance. I think he chose somewhere near turn 6, as you can see and compare the different lines of all the drivers.

He said watching Lewis explore the lines in that area was as sublime experience to behold.

We should make a note of meeting up for a while at least. I have an iPhone and can send my location to another location enabled phone.

I think I will make an F1Technical banner, and make sure it gets photographed with as many beautiful women as I can meet.

I don't have an iPhone. I have a cheap phone with T-Mobile so it will be roaming like crazy up there if I use it. One of my friends might though.
But if you make that sign I could find you near turn 6. Who knows, perhaps X will too.

Any one here in Montreal want a relatively cool and funny guy camping in their backyard? I'll yell at the neighbor kids to get off your lawn if you want

I think I am going to fly/train/bus there, as I am currently vehicle-less. Whatever is cheapest.

The dorm room thing is starting to have appeal, for the price. Priceline told me there are some available, for 68 a night. I've never stayed in a hostel, I hear they are either a blast or a nightmare.
