Mclaren Mercedes MP4-25

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The 23 had mostly water on one side, oil on the other (witnessed by the occasional asymetric inlets), the 24 was complicated by KERS which was mainly on the oil side.

But this year I believe it is mainly just water both sides, (two smaller rads to accomodate the now bulging fuel tank) and the oil cooler has moved to the middle and the back.

that small thingy on top of the gearbox can´t be enough for cooling engine oil...?

with to different outlets as seen on the backside pics one would think they still have one side water and one side combination cooling ...at least they need more air on the left side...

I Believe this is just for gearbox-oil cooling ........

Yes, but I thought/presumed the engine oil cooling had moved inboard as well ...

The Tim Goss quotes from the launch are of course suitably ambiguous, and perhaps it was just the gearbox-oil that moved from the sidepod, but relatively-speaking, is this not quite a large under-the-airbox inlet solely to cool gearbox oil?
Image

Use some of the space under/in-front of the magic sharkfin-corridor and the much enlarged rear exit above the diffuser ski-ramp to accomodate a "total oil-cooling solution" straight down the middle, let the new fuel tank bulge into the sidepods yet remain fairly undercut. Did Macs way, way back not used to have an oil cooler of some sort mounted in the gap infront of the engine airbox-duct.

Go on, someone crack open an engine-cover and let us all have a good nose about.

can we start a malaysian sepang grand prix thread already????

as a first comment about the sepang GP, i wanna see McLaren's stalled wing destroy the back straight-chicane-grid straight with intense speed.

Enforced revisions to Front Wing Endplates (re: formula1.com )

Much too subtle to notice at the time, but following requests from stewards, top and rear edge-profiles rounded-off.

I guess the stewards are afraid that those endplates could become potential tyre-shredders, no?

Probably saved Massa's rear tire when Lewis grazed it on the straight when he tried to pass him....

Good point. That could have been a bit nasty if Massa's tyre had gone there.

Indeed, or if Hamilton's front wing had come off and gone under the front wheels. A just flying 180mph McLaren hitting a planted 180mph Ferrari would have been absolute carnage. Hamilton's front wheel would have touched Massa's rear wheel and with no front wing to hold it down it would have become a missile!

Both guys were very lucky in that close shave. Very lucky.

Hamilton done this before in Interlagos 2009 in Barichello...Is just that he usually gets the 105% out from everything-in those case from slipstreaming...Gotta love these moves he makes...gets the adrenaline pumping...Dangerous yes spectacular as well...Since when F1 was not a "dangerous" sport after all...We have seen worse in racing history 8)
