OK, Mark Donohue is of course the correct answer to the question as it was formulated, but he was indeed in seventh position on the grid, two seconds behind Jackie Stewart on pole, but ahead of Jo Siffert, Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson and eventual winner of both heats, Mario Andretti.
The rear end of the grid was a who's who in American racing at the time with Peter Revson, Tony Adamowicz, Swede Savage, the Unser brothers and AJ Foyt dead last, nine seconds behind Donohue. Toe and heel was not really AJs forte.
Mario won an at the time staggering amount of 39 400 USD for his two heat wins, peanuts by today's standards of course.
Sorry matt21, but I have to give this one to Gary for the motivation!
