Which driver would be fastest in the red bull ?

Post

not much doubt as to which is the fastest car
but which driver would be the fastest in it ?

actually I wondered about this during qualifying at monaco ....ant davidson was talking about the different driving styles , how hamilton was squeezing the maximum out of his car by attacking 100%
he then said he couldn't believe how button drove , didn't know how he did it , looked as though he was just cruising around , but button was only 0.2 slower

over the course of a season treating the car/tyres as gently as that is going to tell , so that's where my vote goes !
to the optimist a glass is half full ; to the pessimist a glass is half empty ; to the F1 engineer the glass is twice as big as it needs to be

Some evidence suggest that Alonso would currently be the best driver in the Red Bull. If you want to check the way this is evaluated read the thread.

Alonso. No doubt. Besides, he has won two a title with that same engine, developed it from it's birth and driven for 3 seasons.

Schumacher?! Without sideshow Mel?! Without FIA assistance?! No chance. Where he is now is exact example of his qualities when he is not favored by team and governing body.

I'm not sure which to choose from the current drivers, but I would like to see Raikkonen in a top level RBR.

That's not relevant to the discussion MC. I would prefer that you keep those comments to yourself or for other forums.

I happen to agree widely with the analysis in the graph because it is based on a consistent method. Just at this moment the Mercedes car is so inferior that you cannot consider the Merc drivers reasonably in a comparison. If the Merc WCC odds come back to between 8 and 15 we would probably have the means to compare.

At the moment comparing drivers with team odds between 50 and 150 is not reasonable because those odds are based on such extremely small samples that they are not representative. Depending of the bookie you get Schumacher between 41 and 95 and Merc between 31 and 57. If you apply the extremes you get variations of score by a factor of four.

So any prediction how the Merc drivers would do in a championship leading car would be guesswork without any basis in reality.

Vettel is expected on third place as WCC and Massa on last place.

I'm tempted to say Alonso or Hamilton.

Hamilton is clearly the fastest driver on the grid, it is argueable if that makes him the best, but he is clearly the fastest, but Vettle is also very fast over 1 lap... Fred is in there as well.

Webber. 8)

Right now he's the fastest driver there is and even BoyWonder cant catch him!

Monaco Qually is all the proof I need, Mark Brained Seb by 4/10ths of a second on the ultimate drivers circuit (not to mention beating Bob by 3/10ths)!

Also if you look back thru Marks F1 career (bar last year due to injury), Mark had the upper hand in qually on all his team mates and usually by a big margin, his cars just weren't good enuf to keep him up the pointy end and when they where good they usually blew up!

Unfortunately, I don't see this topic going anywhere since the question is mostly unanswerable with any certainty. It's only a matter of time before this thread degenerates into another fanboy thread. Would be interesting if you could somehow set up some form of Gage R&R study, though...

A good way of determining who will be fastest is driver comparisons as they change teams and get new partners. This way all the drivers can be linked.

for example;
Hamilton Alonso, Hamilton was proven to be faster.
then Massa Alonso, Alonso is faster. Massa Kimi, Massa is faster. Massa shumacher, Shumacher was faster. Button Barichello, barichello was faster. Shumacher Barichello etc.

so we get a little hierarchy from these details

Hamilton
Alonso/ Shumacher
Massa/ Barichello
Raikonen
Button

and the list goes on as we compare drivers who've had worked with more than 1 driver over the years. The more details the easier to triangulate and find out who trumps who. Heiki and truli can fit in based on hamilton, fisichella, Alonso, glock etc.

For Webber Vettel, Webber is the faster now. We can look on webber's teammates to fit him into the list.
For Sure!!

The problem is you still have the variability of different cars that may or may not suit a particular driver more than the other. Or you could have a team favoring one driver in terms of engineering/car setup. That is why a Gage R&R would be useful. You can quantify the the variance due to a variety of variables. The key is how to correctly define everything. I'd have to think about that, though...

People who are now euphoric over Webber tend to forget that in order to win a WDC you have to deliver the goods for 19 race weekends over ten months consistently. Webber hasn't done this so far this season and there is no reason why he should do it for the rest of the year. No driver keeps his form curve high all the time and has luck all the time in F1.

The question was also who would be the fastest driver in the Red Bull which means to me WDC if all have the same car. Without a shadow of a doubt Kubica was way faster than Webber, Vettel, Alonso or anybody else last race because he did it in an inferior car. But again one race does not count and Kubica sits in a car which is generally so far off the pace that we cannot compare him until the team odds go down from 151 to somewhere like 8-15.

I say with reasonable accuracy you can only compare six drivers this season and those are all shown in my graph. Of those Alonso would be the fastest in the Red Bull and Massa would be the slowest. Webber would not be the fastest by a long way. He just happens to sit in the fastest car which he so far has under utilized. He has a pretty good chance to show the punters that all the problems of the past are history and if he does it he can make a clean sweep and win all the races of the season from now. If he does a Schumacher 2004 I would certainly be prepared to call him fastest but I bet to eat my old tennis sock that this will not happen.
