Struth, Matt, yer picture's gorn, with some stern finger waving from someone or other! And along the way, we didn't mention the marque in question. For the benefit of anyone interested, it was the mighty Ferguson!

Working on my question even as we speak!

This is a passage from an article I wrote last year for a local magazine about a landmark Grand Prix decades ago. I've removed some key information but left plenty in! The questions are:

Which driver is being referred to?
What was the race?
What was the track at which it was held?

Only the person who gets all three correct receives the baton!

"Whilst Brabham, Moss and Brooks were the main contenders, this classic 'what if' race involved a couple more support players, Brooks' team mate Wolfgang von Trips and joker of the pack, the redoubtable ____ ______.

"_____ was a colourful and popular Franco-American driver of independent means, very much in the 'journeyman' category but capable of springing the odd surprise when circumstances allowed. And they allowed at _______ that year! He was entered in his own Cooper with a 2.2 litre engine and really should have been no bother to the front runners. However, during practice, he “accidentally on purpose” noticed a slip road round the back of the track which had the effect of cutting off a large chunk of the lap. During one practice lap he quietly dodged down it without the officials noticing and was credited with a spectacular time - way faster than either car or driver could have achieved by doing the full lap - which got him on the front row of the grid! This meant that he displaced Tony Brooks in the works Ferrari who was consequently obliged to start from row two."

Again we are looking for an F1 race. It was significant for three reasons:

- it saw the simultaneous introduction of two hugely significant automotive technologies to F1 in one race
- the winner also had pole position, the fastest race lap and was the reigning champion
- the sporting rules were changed for the race weekend

1977 British Grand Prix at Silverstone:
- Hunt, the reigning champion won from pole and scored the fastest lap.
- Jabouille debuted the turbo engine in his Renault and radial tires from Michelin.
- The race also saw the introduction of telemetry.

Sorry folks, as much as I try, questions like these are just not answerable for me without the use of googlepedia. But at least I learn stuff along the way, don't I?

Almost right. The change of sporting regulation was the introduction of pre qualifying. But the race was right.

Which team apart from Tyrrell with its "9" produced an obvious copy of the Lotus 79?

D'oh! Missed that one in my research. That's not the car I was looking for. The team in question only competed in two Grand Prixs and failed to qualify on both occasions.

Then, it would probably be the Kauhsen WK?

In fact, most of the cars in 1979 were pretty similar to the Lotus 79 from 1978, including the Williams FW07, the Wolf WR7-8-9 or the McLaren M29...
