Standard weight distribution from 2011

Post

the teams have agreed that all cars will have the same weight distribution from next season
no doubt that will assist in designing the tyres

will petrov still be asked to lose weight?

He won't be asked to lose weight, Petrov is heavy due to the gold coins he brings for self-sponsorship. :P

There was an interview with Whitmarsh, Horner and Brawn on BBC2 qualifying where Brawn claimed the teams had agreed to send a specification to the potential tyre suppliers which would produce tyres requiring the current weight distribution.

they may all have different weight distributions this year, so it does not meaan a standard weight distribution, it means they want tires very close to this year's spec(big difference), which is understanable, but it does not seem to take the reintroduction of KERS into consideration.

Agree, a standard weight distribution makes no sense.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

tell ross brawn ; he announced it
much better than people moving weights up and down the car

I think maybe they want the same sort of balance in terms of durability and grip of the front vs rear tyres?

The teams hate change.
They will do everything in their power to keep the 2011 tyres as similar as possible to what they have now. That's all they are trying to do.

I don't think it will help designing the tires. Why would it?

Besides.. the static weight of the cars is peanuts compared to the downforce generated... and you know damn well THAT isn't going to be "standardized."

yea true but the aero balance needs to be somewhat related to the balance offered by the tyres?

Even so, they may specify a weight distribution in their specification but it will only be a ball park figure. within a few percent.

Having your balance only a couple of percent out can make a good car into a pile of --- and vice versa. Remember the Mercedes changed their wheelbase by 5cm, or approx 0.1%.

I dont think its an unreasonable request given the time constraints. These are extenuating circumstances.

IMO it's too little too late. Different company.. different philosophy in design.. different experience.. different materials.. chances of the tires having similar performance characteristics to 2010 are very slim.

Well, the teams have apparently set up a list of characteristics they want from the tires, that, according to Horner: "will hopefully be cleared and sent to the new manufacturer soon".
Whether the manufacturer can actually build the tires to those specs, in time, is of course a whole other matter.

just goes to show how carefully you have to phrase your statements !

when ross said that all cars would have the same weight distribution next year I presumed that every team would use the same ; as an former tyre man I would

but , of course , he COULD have meant that teams have agree to use the same distribution as they used this year ; makes no sense to me but it is not precluded by the statement
