This is a tribute to my avatar, Chris Amons last hurrah was perhaps the 1972 French GP at Clermont-Ferrand, where he was uncatchable in his Matra until delyed by a puncture.
However, until that race, the French squad had been hampered during the 1972 season by poor engine reliability from the V12, but what was famously done for the home race to fix these problems?
@Dumrick; This one is very well considered.

Amon: When we went so well at Clermont we were using one of the spare long-distance engines from the Le Mans car! The latest F1 engine with its two-ring pistons was giving us a lot of problems, so we fell back on this stand-by engine with three-ring pistons which didn't give us a problem with crankcase pressurisation.
It s from 1964 Xpensive. Graham is sitting in the BRM, but small Damon is sitting in replica of the Lotus. And as the book is describing this photo, he tries to not take an offence from the fact that Damon’s hero was Lotus driver and Graham big rival, Jim Clark.
