McLaren needs to get behind Hamilton NOW!

Post

For all their talk of equality as well as both Lewis and Jenson critisizing Ferrari for their team orders, the only chance McLaren have of winning the WDC is by using team orders to maximise Hamilton's points at every race from now on.

This is especially necessary now that Ferrari are in the mix again and have Alonso as their #1 driver already.

Of course it's a tought spot. End up looking like hypocrites because of all the thrash talking of Ferrari but winning the WDC... or having no team orders and losing the WDC by a few points...

They wont, if they loose the WDC/WCC they will loose with dignity, McLaren have been banging on about team orders all year and mentioned they've lost titles in the past. If they went back on their word they'd regret it, they will get more publicity out of loosing with dignity than winning by being hypocrites. (well no they wont, but they'd get good/nice loving tabloid publicity)

Theres still 5 more races, theres still a lot left in the season. Ferrari arnt really in the mix so stop getting your knickers in a twist.

I'm not sure what to say about this. I've never thought Button was as good as Hamilton but it seems a bit unfair to back one of them at this stage.

However I think it would be a good idea to avoid a repeat of 2007

They don't need to stand behind one driver now, and won't. Button will not impede Hamilton's drive by doing anything but trying to win.

If Button wins every race from now on and Hamilton comes in second, Mclaren will win both titles, and will have given both drivers equal chances, and risen above the likes of Ferrari lame public team orders, and stuck to their guns.

But the thing is monza was meant to be mclarens stomping ground. And look at where they're now. If webber beats vettel tomorrow there is no doubt that we will be the #1 driver. The next few races are red bull territory and maclaren can't afford button taking points away from Hamilton at this stage of the championship. They might as well just come out and say they are not fighting for the wdc anymore

Look, there is no way that two drivers like Hamilton and Button would be on the same team if they knew that their championship fight would be cut short while they were still in with a chance to win. What you're suggesting would put Webber one place up the grid because Jenson would have qualified last in a big sulk. And can you imagine Hami being told to let his team mate pass him and then him doing it, cause I can't? I think McLaren found from the Heikki years that having two competitive drivers rather than 1 + sacrificial lamb, is by far a better situation. Jenson is smart enough to work out that if he can't win it any more, then he should support his team mate, but he won't until he is sure he can't do it himself. Who knows, a couple of poor races for Lewis and the worm might turn...

Although I support Hamilton, you need to open your mind a little. Button has a much right as anyone to the WDC, he will be racing and if he beats Hamilton then Hamilton needs to step up his game.

Where they are at the moment is good considering they are both on completely different setups/strats.

I honestly dont understand your reasoning, McLaren are fighting as hard as any of the top three, if not more, its up to Button AND Lewis to score points for McLaren to win the WCC, if neither score points then they're in trouble and perhaps need to start looking at maximising Lewis' potential to make sure they win at least one title. But they wont admit that.

Button is no real threat to Hamilton's points. Button hasn't finished in front of Hamilton since China and I don't think he is about to start doing it again as likely at is seems (2nd in Monza). On the other hand, if he Looks like he is about to win and Hamilton is right behind, Button should surrender the position because the points will only go to waste. Hamilton would put those extra 7 points to better use.

they should only back hamilton when mathematically, button has zero chance of winning the WDC. Then, will he be directed to be aiming for the CWC.

Then, they will find a cure for AIDS and establish world peace. Because McLaren would never do something so lame as issue team orders. Just ask Heikki or David.
