McLaren MP4-19 Mercedes

MP4-19

Post

All this hoopla over the new Mclaren is just unjustified,we should wait till melbourne to see how the new car fares.
Anyway this is my first post and hope to be the beginning of many more.
Also dont youll think the exhaust outlets on top are too damn close to where the engine is placed wonder how the exhaust must be going out.?

I see in an ITV-F1 website news in'03 that The MP4/18 can carry two different types of gearbox, does the MP4/19 carry the same feature too?

I imagine that is becuase they were running the /17 as well as the 18/19 new gearbox.. they adapted it so they could test the car with the older reliable unit while the new one was being refined.

the /19 shattered the Jerez lap record in testing the other day.

More pics about MP4-19

Hi friends, I got some pics about this impresive car. I did this ones, when I went to the F1 Tests at Circuit de Catalunya. I was on the box building, when David Coulthard stalls his car, just in front of me. And I take my camera and ...Here is the result:

great pics bernif........in 40078.jpg it looks like some of the body work is discoloured by heat. did you notice that or is it something else...
given that they had great difficulties in controlling temperatures and since one of the MP-19s caught fire last week this could be an interesting point.

Cracking images Bernie, A couple of things I’ve noticed.

The wings are old spec, not the debut MP4-19 front wing endplates and 3d rear wing. Although the rear endplate is notched. This notch I have been told (by Geoff Willis) is to bleed pressure from the steepest part of the flap to reduce vortex generation at the wing\endplate intersection and as a result reduces drag. It does not function to improve yaw performance.

New steering wheel moulding with ‘apparently’ moulded (grey) grips for the hands. I understand DC has asked for changes to the cockpit of the new car.

The burn marks are to the inside of the outlet, bearing in mind the exhausts are forward of the chimney the scorching must come from the flow out of the exhausts. So if the heat shields do not cover this area, then the exhaust flow might be going in a different direction to that proven in the windtunnel. So McLaren might have got some element of the windtunnel testing wrong by not replicating the “blowing” of the exhausts accurately (of at all..?). Regardless the flow avoid the exposed forward suspension members and is instead routed over the bulge and duck-tail. This shot clearly shows the broad flat duck-tail formed over the gearbox

Image

Also the split front brake ducts, Mac have used the two scoops for a long time, the unusual angle from this shot shows how the lower scoop (flat triangular shape) is as wide as the regs permit and has a much broader surface area than is really required. Also we can see its proximity and relationship to the Front wing endplate. It is not as high as the endplate, but instead appears to be set at the height of the convex bulge on the outside of the endplate, this bulge is one of the key vortex generating shapes on the FWEP to send flow around the inside of the wheel. The scoops appears to act to prevent the flow coming up too high around the wheel. Suspension members are also shaped with this aim in mind to prevent the up-wash from the rear wing going over the sidepods (and hence bargeboards) upsetting the aero.

a whole lot slower I think that is if you want to make the engine last..

on another topic I see that Mercedes and Mclaren have produced a 1 million $ road car that uses CERAMIC brake discs AND BRAKE by WIRE system !!!!!

Is this the next new item in Fi cars ?

i dont think the lap times at melbourne will be slower, reason.

1. mclaren have a smaller fuel tank, reason is cause in 2003 they found that they never went 1 stop or half laps so it was a waste
2. the new engine rule isnt hampering them as much as you think. infact, some teams have managed to make an engine that is lighter and yet more powerful and reliable to last 800km.
3, michelin will have an even better tyre

Does the MP4-19 has a atrut between the keel? MP4-17 has one to aid stiffness. If there is any strut between the keel(like 2002 Jordan,2002 Arrows),isn't the advantage of having twin keel has been eliminated? the central area is no longer clean...

Both the Mp4-18 and MP4-19 ran with out the strut.

seriously, if you are able to do that... than you had a bad engine in 2003 :D

about the famous heating problems for McLaren... I think we may (for now) scrap that from our book, since the car has now driven 4 days in a row more than 100 laps a day. Not bad if you ask me :)

I doubt that F1 cars would be actually "slower" this season. During the past few years, the teams always managed to pick up more speed despite regulation changes to prevent that. For example, the 2001 season was a funny one in that despite less downforce at the front they were quicker anyway.

Perhaps the engine may not be as light, nor powerful as they could get without the new engine rules, but nevertheless they well be progressive steps compared to last year's units. F1 is simply like that. Apart from the engine, everything else from tires to aerodynamics are revised rather than "strengthend" so they should be fairly quick this year.
