Virgin planned to sell 2010 chassis to Villeneuve/Durango

Post

F1today.nl wrote:Virgin debuted early this year in Formula 1. Designer Nick Wirth designed the car without using a wind tunnel, partly to save costs. Wirth is convinced that this will be the future and that his chassis can be successful in Formula 1. Virgin was eagerly looking forward to the outcome of the FIA meeting during which the sport's governing body took a decision on the thirteenth team for the 2011 season. Sources in the paddock notified F1Today.nl that Virgin had advanced talks with Durango/Villeneuve on the sale of its 2010 chassis. Durango/Villeneuve had jointly tried to enter F1 next year as the thirteenth team. After the FIA had decided not to admit a thirteenth team, Virgin will incur a budget shortfall for 2011.
This is an interesting piece of news. I thought that the constructor definition of FOTA does not allow a team to run a chassis that is based on intellectual property rights of a competitor. I wonder how Wirth was planning to go around this limitation. It appears that Virgin may be buying the right to use their chassis design on an annual basis from Wirth. With that construction any constructor who is separated from a race team by a company shell fire wall would be in a position to sell last year's chassis design. This could be an interesting cost saver for Red Bull's Toro Rosso as well.
Formula One's fundamental ethos is about success coming to those with the most ingenious engineering and best .............................. organization, not to those with the biggest budget. (Dave Richards)

Given Virgin's performance, I'd think a new team might look elsewhere for a successful chassis. And if Virgin based their financial existence on selling chassis to potentialnew teams ("After the FIA had decided not to admit a thirteenth team, Virgin will incur a budget shortfall for 2011.") then they are either incompetent or dreamers.

Just to be fair to Virgin and Werth, I should have written, "then they are either incompetent or dreamers, or wildly optimistic."

Dallara arnt supplying anyone next year as Hispania have 3 options avalable to them; 1) Rent the 3 Toyota TF110 chassis in a modified fashion for 2011 for $10 a chassis, 2) Use the Hispania HRT/01 chassis that Geff Willis has been designing since arround the Spanish GP, 3) The third option is to sell the entry and let someone else (Epsilion to drop a name) have a try.

The most probable option is #2 as Colin Kolles has been trying to get everything that is needed to get that chassis off the ground at one of his factories in Germany.

I know Dallara is not supplying HRT. The question is can they supply 2 teams as Red Bull Engineering supplied for STR and RBR?

I am not really into the regulations side of F1, but I guess they can provide cars for two teams as long as the cars are not completely Identical. :?:

Then again, maybe he sees Branson's backing off on the Virgin branding as an accepterais-tu for him :P

(Disclaimer: i just looked up Accepterais-tu in a translator and it came up as invitation. If my use of the French is wrong, please forgive me :P
