I read that a South African taxpayer funded company "African Renaissance Holdings"(ARH) are one of the main proponents for the bid.
Hoping that a bid may also improve the chances of a black driver being capable of winning the title by the time everything is settled.
(whatever happened to THE BEST DRIVER rather than simply "black driver??)
I South african, sometimes shamefully so.
If it is taxpayer funded ( which is probably the intention ) the cost will at least be double of what Bernie wants - the half that Bernie doesn't get, get distributed to ARH and the "connected politicians and friends" . I am aware who ARH is ........

When the go ahead was given , the Cape Town SWC stadium was approved at a staggering R1.3 bil, at completion . It cost R4.6 bil- and that same taxpayer is paying for it 1/2 to FIFA, 1/2 to "empowerment"

As far as the best driver is concerned - remember Adrian Zaugg ( who ???) our "best" driver salvation - well he was not born here , never ever lived here, not a citizen. At least the taxpayer did not sponsor him ( I hope )

It is Afrikaans, sort of similar to Dutch, and yes i had to learn it at school, for what i don't know .... A GP in South Africa, that might be the first time i get to see an F1 car in person after 15 years of following the sport, come on guys how can you call it a world championship if you don't have a race on the African continent... Viva south africa, an f1 race in Cape Town would be world class and spectacular! Table mountain in the background, just imagine ...... We have and had great south african's designing for F1 now give us a race and then i will truly believe that this is a world championship ... but please oh please don't drop a race like SPA !

...

If there was to be a South African GP, would Kyalami be suitable or would the track have to severely upgraded or even a new track built? More importantly would there be enough financial resources available?

Andrew IF there is a GP, it would need to make money for the taxpayer.
If it does not, then it will go down as another expensive white elephant by the ANC government.
Dont get me wrong, my nostaglic side would love a Kyalami GP. But is it worth the investment that would otherwise be going onto powerstations(daily power cuts, never happened in my day...the NEW South Africa eh??) Schools, or Crime prevention?

I mean just the other day the head of Police said white South Africans are running scared for NO reason. That all the crime was a figment of their imagination. Yet ever independant report ACCUSES the police of turning a blind eye and in alot of cases not even filing reports of crime.

Problems mount every day, yet here we are discussing an F1 race. It's much like having a feast during a famine. And after the much vaunted world cup, people are left looking at each other saying "is it worth it?"

The only way this will happen is if some Billionaire(Sol Kersner) stumps up the readies, knowing full well he will lose most of it.
More could have been done.

Kyalami is very restricted , most of the land originally around has been sold off and developed .So no real expansion of the track available . The current track is point , squirt , brake, turn . Fun to drive but not for F1 as it is

Whats most annoying is Tilke will probably design the circuit should there be one. And he will no doubt incorporate an assegai or Zulu shield to make it more "south african".
A street race in cape town...cheaper...and imagine the spectacle!

I agree, a street race in cape town is more of a fit for what F1 is today. It would certainly be spectacular...As long as it has overtaking opportunities galore!

A possible South African GP would probably be the only race where the sound of F1 engines is drowned out.....by vuvuzelas.

After reading this thread, you would think South Africa is the only country in Africa.

There are other African countries that could host the GP, and they have the money.
Not in the next 3 years but down the line there are options outside south africa.

A good example is Nigeria.

Yes, and hasn't Tripoli hosted a GP in the past, and maybe Morrocco?

I agree, they should re open Kyalami,Love the Circuit.
But,Money rules...LeoLeo

South Africa has a substantial F1 history, with the Kyalami track and of course Jody Scheckter.

But I agree that F1 should probably not be on SA's priority list right now. One day soon, perhaps...
