Information on Displaying Telemetry Data

I'm a fourth year computer science student and this term I'm taking a class on data visualization. One of the assignments involves presenting to the class a topic of my choice on data visualization. There's a list of research papers to choose from, but they're all pretty dry and not very interesting. If I can find an article or paper on telemetry in motorsport, preferably F1, with enough detail to satisfy the professor I could use it instead. I've spent some time working through Google and various automotive and technical magazine websites but haven't found anything beyond a very brief description of What Is Telemetry for the general audience.

If anybody here knows of a good place to narrow my search, whether it's a place online that is more likely to have what I'm looking for or a specific technology to try and look for, you'd save the world one more hour of somebody talking about visualizing file access times and network load and I'd love you forever.

If you are looking into the hardware/transmission side of things, you may find some informations here.

These guys (company) did the hardware/transmission side of PI´s F1 telemetry.

But if I understand you correct (and maybe I don´t) you are looking into the presentation/analysis of data. If this is the case, then you tread title is maybe a bit missleading.
There are many other race series (e.g. DTM/WTCC) which make extensive use of analysing and interpreting data but don´t use telemetry.

Maybe you can explain (for me, being slow thinking ) a bit better what you would like to do, and then the forum members are maybe able to help you better.

The way I understood your question topic is that you have data (let´s say water temperature of the engine, brake pressure or throttle usage) and are looking for different ways to present the data.

This could be,
- as a simple numerical value e.g. 96°C, 53 bar, 87%
- time based via a graph value vs. time
- distance based value via distance (location at the track)
- X-Y graphs, one value in relation to another value eg. roll vs. lateral accel.
- 3 dimensional graphs e.g. long. accel vs. speed vs. throttle position

etc. etc.

Assuming this isn't a final year project or anything of that ilk, do you really need more than one or two papers? Undergrad work rarely involves all that much research and I'd have thought that if you can present a very general overview of what goes on, that would be sufficient. That said, you've piqued my curiosity (I'm a mere electronics graduate) as I'd have thought that the subject would be better suited to a more 'signal processing' type course.

Yeah, I realize now that I've been mixing up the terms telemetry and data acquisition. Generally when I see the graphs and charts and whatnot on a show or in an article it's called the telemetry data, so I've always associated the word telemetry with the graphical readouts. The focus of the course I'm taking is definitely more on the display and interpretation of the data rather than the technology behind collecting or transmitting it. It's a senior year undergrad course cross listed as a graduate course, so the class is roughly half and half undergrads and grads. The grads have a lot more in terms of what I think of as proper academic work. They have to do a formal review on the papers and a bunch besides, where as us undergrads only have to summarize and present the material and answer some questions on it.

The document linked by 747 is pretty close to what I'm looking for. It's a lot more practical and less scholarly than the examples provided by the professor to choose from, but as an undergrad there should be enough there for me to ask the prof if I can use it for the assignment.

I'd just like to say thanks to the forum in general and 747heavy in particular. With the you provided I managed to put together a presentation and summary report on visualizing data in F1 that earned me an A in a pretty demanding course. The professor said in six years of teaching the course it was one of the most interesting presentations he'd seen.
