Seriously though. Most twitter people are either way too formal, hence no more insight than if you'd just read the news, or act like real human beings who tend to digress. In doing so they often overload the feed with random things you have no interest in or chatting with someone about something you can't understand not knowing the context.
I carefully chose who to follow but it's always about having to go through the mud to pick your jewels. Sometimes it's really worth it.

Am I too late to join the boycott of pointless sites like twitter, facebook, myspace etc etc?

Really can't see the point of twitter. I don't care if Stephen Fry bought a pint of milk at 8.03am, poured it on his cornflakes at 8.20am, had a fart at 8.35am, walked through to the living room at 8.36am etc etc!

Perhaps I am missing the point of such sites but I can't help but think life is too short to waste time on twitter. At least on here I can learn something interesting. You don't get that on twitter!

Andrew,

Twitter is exceptional for its ability to get all your sources of news in one place.
If you like everything Ferrari but have to trawl through 20 sites, twitter will do that all by sourcing the juicy bits in one sentence. If you like the story, click the link and boom there you go.

everything from offical sources to people like Scarbs or even Rogue mechanics in F1(and drivers) can tweet info that would otherwise not be shared by the larger news gathering media.

It personalises your news medium. Im starting out on it, I shared your reservations but since I signed up i havent looked back. In a week when testing is in full swing, I will no doubt wonder how I survived without it.

One word of caution, dont follow ever tom dick and harry. Go to people you regularly get news off, like F1technical autosport etc, but then also look for specialist people that get insider info like James Allen and Scarbs.
More could have been done.

Andrew, I am not sure if you have lived in the city your whole life or not, but if you live somewhere, move away for 15 years, and move again, Facebook really comes into it's own. It lets you keep in touch with your friends, and more importantly, their lives. This exchange goes both ways. When you phone someone you haven't spoken to in years, it can be hard to catch up, as there has been so much it can take a while to peel back the layers and get to the core of what is going in their life.

I was very meh about Facebook for a while, as it seemed pointless when I would see people on an ongoing basis that lived around the corner. Some people spend too much time on it, but like email, snail mail, the telephone and semaphore flagging, it's just another means to communicate, and if communication is important to you, you are doing yourself no service by not at least joining.

Twitter is also a great tool, and I felt similar to you when it came out, but as I have said, I have recently seen it's power and like any tool, it's only as good as it's operator.
Before I do anything I ask myself “Would an idiot do that?” And if the answer is yes, I do not do that thing. - Dwight Schrute

Thanks for your vote sawtooth!

I can also recommend Mike Gascoyne on twitter, he's sometimes posting how car development is going.

But I agree, I follow Mike too. He often reveals lots of otherwise secret tit-bits.
