1) McLaren cars in the past have been reknown for their mechanical grip, traction, ability to ride bumps etc. Even with cars with bad aero, their mechanical grip, ability to heat up tires etc has shown through. But for some reason they decided to go after RBR and Ferrari in Aero where McLaren will never win and at the same time have compromised the characteristics of the cars that McLaren were known for. Jack of all, master of none. They need to go back to their roots.
Even the 24 was competitive in Monaco, don't forget. And anyone remember how the 2007 Monaco race turned out?

well, if they cannot make a fast enough car, even if they focus on 1/2 driver would not help them, no

Exactly my point. Going after Ferrari and RBR with Aero was one of the worst decisions McLaren can make. They should be playing with their strenth. Mechanical grip. With KERS this is even more important as you can get on the button earlier.

Now they have a car with mediore aero and mediore mechanical grip so that on any given day they will lose out to cars with superior aero or a superior mech grip.

Before you could easily count on tracks like Monaco, Monza, Singapore, Abu Dabhi etc where McLaren could grab some good points and still come 2nd, 3rd in their "weak" tracks. Now they will just be consistently coming 3rd, 4th.

Ferrari was not faster than RBR last year and look how close they got to winning a championship by focusing on their 1/2 driver. You may laugh but unless you have a domimant car, you need to focus on one driver. The past few years have shown this.

they did not do it in 2007 when they signed a 2x WDC and a rookie. In 2008 Heiki was just slower, even if he was not, he had no chance to get their support. Now with 2 British WDCs, how do you expect them to blatantly favor one of them? The British press will eat them alive

I really don't think we need to go around in circles here again. There are too many factors to make any one opinion right, and this is a different thing from team to team culture. Having a team that allows drivers to fight will attract "Hamiltons" but shy "Alonsos".

The negative effects have to be looked at with the positive ones. Focusing on one driver is not the magic bullet unless all you want is the WDC.

Unless there is actually something new to add, the same circular discussions will lock the thread.

We already have three threads for McLaren so I don't think this will be necessary anymore, especially with it's negative intonation. Lock time.
