This is my way of doing it. Get out a PDF of the technical regulations. Decide upon a wheelbase length (3300mm is standard atm). Make the tyres first, they're easy and a standard part. Then create the cockpit entry template, and create the cockpit area. Then create a cockpit entry and the sidepod entry holes, and work backwards on the sidepods and engine cover. stick with the regs and the appendix that go with it, they are really helpful, using diagrams to explain. Don't think of the car as in 3 parts either, think of the car of being each different part, wings, diffuser, cockpit sidepod shark fin, intakes, splitter, floor nose etc... Hope i could help.

sort of ideas, but also where to start. however it has stick within this years regulations and also be a bit basic. and something a bit harder then using a programme, im drawing it by hand instead.

well i kinda was looking to do it as a whole middle section but something basic and not much detail; seeing as im drawing it and just need like a isometric drawing of the shell, but also sticking to this years regulations.

start building the tub and then build the sidepods and engine cover around it.

Hi, James, I myself am producing a car in google sketchup, getting it to curve in 2 ways is easy when you get the hang of it,

if you are stuck with the edges being too harsh you can soften certain edges.

when making the sidepods for example curving in the x plane and y plane, you start with one plane and do the second curve bit by bit using the curve tool and sectioning off the original curve.

Hope this helps

what do you exactly mean by curv in x and y plane?

that means that you first make the curve over the x-plane(longitudinal axle) and then over the y-plane(over the width).
