Which is the car that only used cooling panels rather than any intake at all again?

Brabham BT46
wiki wrote:The Brabham BT46 was a Formula One racing car, designed by Gordon Murray for the Brabham team, owned by Bernie Ecclestone, for the 1978 Formula One season. The car featured several radical design elements, the most obvious of which was the use of flat panel heat exchangers on the bodywork of the car to replace conventional water and oil radiators. The concept did not work in practice and was removed before the car’s race debut, never to be seen again

We're talking about F1 here, which only started in 1946 with the start of standardised rules for all GPs, known then as Formula A (with the first World Championship in 1950, where the name Formula 1 was first used). Before that it was called Grand Prix Racing and the rules were different for each race. The Auto Unions are not F1 cars.

So fair enough, the AUs were the first mid engined cars to win a GP, but they are not F1 cars. So they don't count in this thread, as amazing as they were. And they were pretty damn cool.

The rear of that thing looks strangely like the W02... Is Mercedes that late in development? :lol:

"Beautiful" as in "butt ugly"? That thing is seriously horrible.

The Brabham BT46 is so awsome :)

I really hope the new 2013 regulations will bring back those "tractor" tyres with huge rears and tmaller fronts. At least in the width if not the diameter :)

Brabham BT46

That picture is of the BT46B , known as the Fan Car
The original BT46 did not have the fan at the back , it had heat exchange panels laid out all over the body work on the sloping sides (like the tiles on the space shuttle IYSWIM)
It never raced as the heat exchangers just did not provide enough cooling - as admitted to by Gordon .
Sorry can't post a piccie but here is a link- don't know if it will work :?

Interesting recent cars, though not succesful, mostly due to the lack of funding and good drivers;

The Minardi PS05; The last Minardi ever made, incredible design i still have to say with incredibly tight sidepods for its time.
Image

And the Arrows A23;
High nose and double keel, incredible design. It scored 2 points if i reemembered correctly with the team dropping out mid seaeon due to the lack of funds, with more funds I am pretty sure it could have been more competitive.

Are you saying that the current F1 cars are not the most technically advanced race cars in the world?
Yes. The FW14B had active suspension, ABS, TC, semi-auto gearbox annd the best aero package in the field at the time.

Look at this image and I think you can see similarities with Newey's current best-in-field particularly the back end treatment:

Sure it was mechanically advanced and had a lot such gadgets but it wouldn't be faster than a current F1 car.

Pole Position Spa 1993: 1'47.571
Pole Position Spa 2010: 1'45.778

Only two seconds faster today than 20 years ago!

I would suspect those old Williamses to run in midfield nowadays.

That's not the same thing at all. And I'd like to see how fast it would be on current tyres. It had plenty of grunt and lots of downforce so it'd be close.
