8 gears in F1?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

8 gears in F1?

Post

Was just on a GT5 forum and read that the ISF 2007 (Race Modified) has 8 gears.

Got me thinking that F1 cars might have 8 gears when that new engine cones in. It would help keep the turbo boost up would it not.
Finally, everyone knows that Red Bull is a joke and Max Verstappen is overrated.

When the amount of gears was free, they converged to 7.

More was more mass, more inertia, but I think the main reason was that you lost time while changing gears.

In the extreme of having 200gears, they would be so equally spaced you'd spend all the time changing gears.

Amount of gears is not free since at least mid 90's. 4 to 7 gears are allowed.

And Renault used a only 6 gears ratio during the V10 era in order to transmit the torque during the start.

edit: minimum gear ratio is not specified anymore. Don't know when they removed it but it is not so long ago.

as f1 is trying to go "green" would an extra gear not aid this vision? I'm thinking of your average road car which uses a 6th gear to save fuel

What would be the reason for that would increase the number of gears in F1?, would have an advantage? and disadvantage?

They would still be at the limit, hitting the revlimiter at the same speed as before.

McLaren developed a 7 spd gearbox that was twin clutch (banned before it raced) before the era of seamless shift and the removing of the regulation that specified the time it takes to change gear, that had the potential to act as a cvt.

There was a CVT tested back in '93, by Williams.

It's the worst thing to ever hear.

You're like: c'mon max RPM, change gear... and that never happens.
