tyres for monaco and canada

Post

according to the pirelli website the tyre selection for these 2 races is soft and supersoft

I had the , clearly erroneous , idea that there had to be a gap in the selections

but apart from that , it sounds a bit odd to me ...whereas it looks fine for monaco I had the idea that canada was rather tough on tyres

So we are going to see five-stoppers in Canada...

well , that's what I thought !

it has become clear that pirelli have followed the FIA brief and designed tyres for 2 to 4 stops , not an easy thing to do !

so would they really select tyres for a 5 stopper in canada ?

Canada was abrasive because the track surface was brand-new, right? Is it still abrasive after one year?

As I understood it, the Canadian tarmac wasn't abrasive - it was more a case of Canada's tarmac on the circuit being very slippery; so a lot of understeer and wheelspin gets generated everywhere, and that killed the tyres. Making softer tyres could actually help as it would have more mechanical grip to decrease the under/oversteer in low speed.

If we got into a situation where it was a 6 stopper, drivers would have to drive on a set of tires already used in the race, and the team would have to decide that set they would use on that car. Effectivly meanint that a driver would have to drive a car on tires that had passed into the final stages of Phase 2 of degredation.

Imagine it, there is say 15 laps left of the race, and all the P1-P8 guys have 5 stopped and they need to pit at least 2 more times for already used tires, and P9 downward have pitted 4 times and have one more set of tires avalable if they need so.

You could see a situation where someone like Buemi or Kobiyashai wins the race just on the fact they have that set of tires on, and the others are lapping 4 seconds a lap faster than a Red Bull or McLaren in P1 and have 40-50 seconds to make up on them for the fact that the they tires are down at the bottom of the cliff on the front guys.

Yes its great what Pirelli have done, but id have gone Soft/Medium here. Bridgestone went Medium/Super Soft in 2010.

today pirelli say the reason for the choice is that canada has the same level of grip and traction as monaco

perhaps the problems we saw were purely due to the track disintegrating
