Alonso and his numbers.

"You know I like playing with numbers - and as I travelled backwards and forwards between home, Maranello and Turkey, I made a comparison between my first four races of last year and those of this year in the corresponding grands prix," said Alonso on Ferrari's website.

"What came out of this little game was that compared to 2010 I'm eight points short (49 versus 41) but in the same four races, this year I've brought home 13 more points compared to last year (41 versus 28).

"It's true that my current gap to the top of the drivers' championship is much greater (52 points) compared to what I had after Shanghai 2010 (11 points) but I well recall that after Silverstone we were 47 points away and we only had eight races left.

"Today we still have 15 grands prix to come. This shows that you can look at the same thing in two different, even completely opposite ways. What matters are results and we've started to make the podium: we must do that regularly and if so I'm convinced that we will again be able to fight for the title."

He was right last year aswell saying that from a certain race (can´t remember) that to win the championship he needed to finish on the podium in every single race. Which i think is true since if he had gotten a podium in Abu Dhabi he would have won the WDC i think?

I distinctly remember thinking "podium in every race" means 5 podiums; so that must have been Monza

Yea that´s probably correct, just checked f1.com and he went on the podium from there on winning 3 of the last 5 races only to miss out on the podium in the last race.

Will be interesting to see his numbers mid-season and what his prognosis is in terms of where he must finish

I don't 100% understand what he's saying though. Is he totalling his points tally from Australia+Malaysia+Turkey+China 2010?

By this race last year there was 5 races, but this year there are only four because of Bahrain.

I haven't checked last years schedule but I think that's what he is on about.

This season is totally different, by this race last year Vettel had have a lot of troubles and Alonso had the best second car on the grid. Right now Vettel has a reliable car and a third place in four races isn´t enough to think in the WDC. His declaration was for the Ferrari website and obviously he has to be optimistic, but I doubt he thinks having real chances this year.

The only way that anyone other than Vettel has a chance this year is really if one or both of McLaren or Ferrari get their changes for Spain dead right, and catch all the way up to RBR. A 2 race win head start is already a steep hill, if it gets to 3/4 race wins you'd expect the championship to be won by August.

Alonso is just doing his part to try to convince F1 fans that this season is not over till its over. But deep down I am sure he knows that this championship is pretty much over and it is a matter of time before Ferrari and other team will abandon 2011 and concentrate on 2012 and 2013.

Sure RBR doesn´t have the problems this year but don´t foget that Ferrari can never be counted out, they will improve and catch RBR, same with Mclaren.

All i´m saying is that it´s a looong way to go before it´s over.

The only reason why Alonso had a chance at the championship last year was because of RBR's internal problem. And I think the only team who really have a chance on the championship will be Mclaren rather than Ferrari. I honestly dont see how a team who is struggling with their wind tunnel can really beat Newey's RB7.

The only way anyone but Vettel is going to win the WDC is him having a string of bad luck + an on fire Webber, and the Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault, and Mclaren all taking away the occasional win and points from him.

Really? they sure had some serious problems at Monza and Singapore...

Like he said, finishing on the podium was more then enough. The season has just started, the other´s will catch up.

What I take out of that comment is;
their ain't no quit in that freakin' guy, and it would be a mistake to count him out of the title race yet, even though Massa has beaten him into a bloody pulp to this point of the season.

Massa 0 - Alonso 4 - Alonso has out-qualified Massa in every race so far.

Who´s the better Racer,
Massa 2 - Alonso 2 - Equal in terms of race but Alonso still has almost 20 points more then Massa.
