@gridwalker: Agree that the shade of red may have changed, but if memory serves, Ferarri F1 cars were red with white way back in the 70's (specifically recall the flat 12 family having red body, white wings and gold wheels). The change from one red to another may have been to satisfy a sponsor, but could also relate to making the cars look better on TV.

I repeat, though: the masses who PM might be after know nothing and care less about this whole topic.

Scarlet is the Ferrari colour.

The current Red was brought in from 1997 onwards, the same year Marlboro ditched Mclaren to sponsor Ferrari.
More could have been done.

I don't remember my source for this I'm afraid, so I may well be wrong... but IIRC the official colour of ferrari is actually yellow – it's just not the colour most associated with them.

Can this link be considered as a reliable source?

Back when it mattered (pre mega-sponsorship), each country had a color, I believe assigned by the FIA. Whoever chose/assigned the color, Italy's is red. As an aside, that is why green is so often associated with Lotus (and BRM) -- it is England's color.

Yeah, Red was Italian cars' color. The color yellow has sth to do with Modena I believe.

The yellow and the rampant horse, cavelino rampante form part of the count Francesco Baracca legend to bring good fortune.
Ferrari and Enzo colours are scarlet red.

As a matter of fact, I quit the Camels after Nelson Sr. left Lotus and when Surtees had Durex sponsorship in the 70s, ah well...
