Want a heavy & complex theory on the engine formula switch?
Read ol' Joe Saward's take on it all.. he claims it's just one move of Ecclestone's in the ultimate game of chess for control of the FIA & F1..

But, on the fairytale that is Walker's Indycar threat, I did like this..
A clever pal of mine has pointed out that [the Indycar] 2.4-litre turbo inline-4s or V6s, producing 550-750hp, will be of a larger capacity than their 1.6-litre F1 equivalents and so will either rev less or be blown less hard than the F1 equivalents if they are producing the same levels of horsepower. Either way they will probably make less quantity and less quality noise as a result.

So why would the fans choose to listen to them any more than they would listen to the F1 engines of tomorrow?

With all the talk of manufacturers in and out of F1, a recent Automotive News TV piece might be pertinent. With Renault apparently wavering a bit, it is possible Nissan might get into high profile racing, because Carlos Ghosn said recently:
-- for the first time ever, Nissan's business plan calls for Nissan to "go on the offensive."
-- Nissan's new slogan is "Nissan Power 88"
-- Nissan is the most profitable of all Japanese auto manufacturers
-- beginning soon, Nissan will introduce a new model every 6 weeks (!)
-- He makes $12.1 million per year (heads of Toyota and Honda are around $1 million; Ford's CEO makes $21 million)

Mod: if this does not belong here, please move. I did not want to start a new thread for this snippet.
Enzo Ferrari was a great man. But he was not a good man. -- Phil Hill

How much to bend over backward to court some OEM entirely depends on how badly the governing body wants them. In the end its OEM's call to see if it aligns with what they want out of racing. In VAG's case they've pretty much decided that something that can relate better to production car is more worthwhile, so its Le Mans and WRC for them...
But this late in the game, leaving fellow OEMs waiting?
No paper signed or money changed hand, there was never anything that says Audi has to commit. It is FIA's want, not Audi's need. FIA is desperate to get more OEs involved, especially they lost the Japanese.
