What's wrong with you guys, I already said it was a V8 turbo, twin at that?

But when first presented, it was something else that shocked the enineering-world?

Was it some kind of "spaghetti" exhaust connecting one exhaust port from each cylinder to one small turbo, and the second port to a second one?

Or "on-plug" coil packs?

When it was introduced in qualifying at the Italian GP 1982 the turbo had to great a response time compared to it's peers. So it wasn't used for the race.

The engine was unbelievably unreliable and thirsty.

Yes, yes, yes, the engine was a dog in everywhich way, but as it was first presented, it had a specific technical feature that took other engineer's breath away!

What was this?

And the price goes to shelly! When first presented, the engine had no less than eight single carbs, rather than injection which came later on!

Extracted from the net:

It's been said that when aerodynamicist Peter Wright carried out initial tests on model sections in the Imperial College wind tunnel, the message he sent back to project leader and Lotus Engineering Director Tony Rudd was "The Mosquito flies".

"The mosquito flies" , indicating that his theories were giving good results, even though we came quite by accident .

And some google translation:

All 1976 (and part of 1977), were devoted to the study of a device that would allow to "seal" the edges of the duct to exploit the vacuum generated in the car. First the Lotus installed a sort of "brush" bristles fixed, then was fitted with a hinged panel on the underside of the belly crawling on the asphalt with the mobile side (by changing the angle of the hinge, the border remained close to the ground).
