Since I don't want to be the one to kill this thread, I'll give a little hint - This was a (very) hot race.

I'll give a bigger one tonight if no one can figure it out.

I can't quite figure the sponsors logos.

Is it an F1 race? The car and driver have distinct colours - turquoise car and driver with white sleeves and red gloves.

edit - possibly Renault, Benetton, or Pacific ?

It is an F1 race (and it is an official championship race not like Williams classic run at Road America).

I'll even go so far as to say that is Eddie Cheever pictured (I'll leave the pedants to figure out what car it is).

Gosh - he didn't finish many races did he? That narrows it down a lot!

Well keep in mind no one said he finished the race...

I have to say I'm shocked no one got this, when someone finally does I'll have to spill the beans on how this should have taken a single wikipedia lookup.

Detroit? Probably 1985?

Found a video - you can see similar sponsor logos and trees behind a concrete barrier at 5:20

Belle Isle = Detroit (as far as I know) and was guessed on the last page. It still isn't right :)

F1 only used the Detroit street circuit.

Must be Dallas 84, the race report says it was a stinker

The car for that year is the right colour, and he wore red gloves http://www.flickr.com/photos/antsphoto/2843826426/

.... found it!

Yes you have got it right, Richard, the exact source as well.

The easy method was the event sponsor, Stroh's Beer (visible on the red boards). A look at their wikipedia mentions the only F1 grand prix they sponsored - Dallas, 1984.

Your way works too though!

Well if Richard doesn't mind, I'll fill time with this:
