The Aussie is surely good at staff-management and such, but that's not really the objective here, is it?
I have evidence to prove otherwise - words from Patric Head himself! Now according to Mr. Head, Sam is very gifted technically, and creatively, and he would rather be contributing to the design of the car than be a manager/director. Head said this is in one of the wind-tunnel episodes i think.

I'm not certain the Patrick Head is the ultimate witness of Michael's engineering competence, doubt if he's what HRT needs.

I don't think Patrick Head is an entirely credible source, and he is really Williams's problem. He should either take responsibility for something or ride off into the sunset, as he seems to be an interfering shadow around there. Various comments from the team and from Parr calling his retirement show that they think they're carrying baggage.

However, I've seen nothing to suggest that Michael is a dyed-in-the-wool technical person who is able to work out what needs doing with the car. He has relied on others over the years to do that. I've just seen no correlation between Michael and any upward trend at Williams over the years he's been there.

"He has relied on others over the years to do that."
But how do you know that? hehe.

Ok I have a little snippet from Barichello. I know... 8)
Barrichello said he will be sad to see technical director Sam Michael leave but felt that the Australian had been left in a position at the team with too much to do.
"Sam is doing five or six jobs, so he's overloaded," explained Barrichello. "It's too much for a single human being. He ends up achieving only half of his own capability doing his own job because he's overseeing other things.

"Sam is a great engineer. He went into the job very early, very young and ended up doing things that he was capable of, but he was still learning. His real capabilities are creating the car and working on the engineering side."

Barrichello also suggested that the team should have consulted him more about what it was planning to do and not been so quick to speak to the media.

One things for sure that Michael will be in either Black and Red, White and Red, White and Green or even Black and Gold next year.

Id recon that Aldo Costa will stay in Italy with Toro Rosso somehow.

For 2012 there is a glut of Technical Directors around and only a few teams to take them.

And to think, people felt bad when he got sacked at Williams. Who's laughing now?
