A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.
I think I have read this whole thread and never quite understood the origins of the T127 design, I don't think they are quite detailed here and wondered if anyone could shed any light.
I have read a lot on here about and in other places about how the T127 is an 'old' design using 5 year old technology and so on. But in what sense it is it 5 years old, is it just that the Xtrac gearbox is out dated technology or something deeper than just the rear end? Is it just the idea that the concepts are so basic that the car is essentially 5 years behind on development as opposed to actually being some old relic thought up by a mind stuck in the past?
I don't believe that Gascoyne would have sat their and said we need a car quick so we'll design some old brick from years back, surely you could design a simple 'current' car or am I being naive? Undercut side pods were hardly cutting edge in 2009 for example yet they are nowhere near the Lotus.
Which begs the question is this an 'old' raw design that was simply jazzed up for 2010 and if so what was it intended to be originally and who penned it?
*Is it some of MG's last work while at Force India before he was booted?...Surely it would still be more advanced if so?
*Is it some kind of base Toyota from the early days of the TF109, it seems to have some visual similarity especially on the development of the front end, this would make some sense as MTO Consulting claims to have played a big role in the whole design, but the TF10 looks radical in comparison so again it goes a bit cold here.
*Is it more the work of Jean Claude Migeout at Areolab who now works closely with Lotus now, but again only heard his name pop up recently
I struggle to believe it really is a brand new car looking as it does but perhaps it really is just under developed, does anyone out there know much of its true beginnings and bloodline, some big name designers have been credited at different times as mentioned above but it all still seems a bit unclear.
Thoughts/Opinions/Knowledge?
It's an intriguing car wherever it came from that's for sure!
I remember them saying that the cooling inlets were the wrong size for the engine and the gearbox doesn't work with the planned aerodynamics, so the car was "done" before knowledge of the drivetrain to be used.
If someone would ask them, they might even answer about the origins of the car.
With a RS27 with is said to be less demanding on fresh air, an ultra compact RBR gearbox, a conventional diffuser and more time to optimise the bodywork, the next Lotus will be superb
The latter, with a simple diffuser, already produces as much DF as the T127 according to the team.
I stop dreaming. Nothing is won yet...
But I don't understand why they are running the old engine cover, (since Brasil atleast)
