Best season of last decade

Post

Which season would you choose to "enter" if you discovered a time machine?
Give some reasons in terms of technology, drivers quality, on track entertainment/overtaking.

I would choose to enter season 2004 mainly because of the "open" engine regulations, something we really miss today. Also it was a domination year for Ferrari/Schumacher. And it was the first year i attended a Grand Prix.

As a Vettel supporter 2011 has been a dream. Races haven't been too bad in terms of on track action. If only we could fuse this year's on track action with last year's championship yo-yo.

I went for 2010 - we had an unprecedented 4/5 drivers challenging for the championship, lots of twist and turns, great races (China, Australia, Turkey, Korea, Spa) and plenty of controversy. Only thing i didn't like was that qualifying was too predictable too often.

Also really like 2008, 2007, 2006 and 2003. It was actually very hard for me to decide between 2010 and 2008 (i doubt we'll ever see a championship ending like that again in our lifetime).

I went for 2008, that was simply a really great season, seen so many battles and exiting races. From 2005 till 2008 all were good actually, after that it was boring as hell and way too predictable.

2008 as the racing was close and went down to the final corner where there was a new WDC for 30 seconds and then another driver took it away from him after the most dramatic race ive known ever.

However 2009 was the closest in terms of pure racing in terms of all 20 cars being within 1.5 seconds a lap of each other on any given track.

However the closest races between 2 drivers were in 2005 & 2006 at Imola between MSC and ALO.

Voted 2008, but would've easily voted 2010 instead if it didn't have a somewhat boring race as finale.

+1

The teams are too spaced out now, like back in 2008 it was soo tight between the top 3 teams, now its redbull +0.5-1s McLaren +0.4s Ferrari

IMO its down to the rule changes, for the reasons I am about to state:

With rule changes alot of loopholes are available allowing 1 team to capitalise by a massive amount (Brawn GP, RBR)

in 2008 all cars had pretty much maximized the cars (not much change between 2007 and 2008 between the cars design) allowing the cars to be very close time wise

in 2008 there may not have been loads of overtaking like there is now, but there was battles, down to the last lap, at the moment its wait for DRS, tyres to fall off, etc

IMO Lets go back to 2008 rules (without the appetures)

There have been a lot of great seasons since I started following F1 again in '06- the first race I watched again was the title clinching Japan '06, which saw an epic duel resolved between a competitive Schumacher and Alonso. 07 had a thrilling start and conclusion and lots of drama despite spygate etc. 08 was as already said once in a lifetime stuff, crashgate notwithstanding, 09 was the fairytale with Honda/Brawn making good (too bad for Honda they missed out!), and '10 was a competitive season that Vettel thoroughly deserved. '11 has maybe been the least exciting- ironic given all the 'excitement enhancers' DRS etc.

This was a difficult one - I voted 2010 almost immediately because there were a lot of exciting races and I suppose the memory of that is still fresh in my head.
Then I started thinking about some of the other years and realized that there's been something good about every year.

The early 2000's were exciting - especially the duels between the Ferrari's and the Williams BMW's and in particular Schumacher and Montoya. Ralph was also around and it was exciting to see Michael's brother competing.
2004 was Schumi's year of complete domination, which for me as a Schumi fan was really great.

I didn't enjoy 2005 because it was obvious he was going to lose his title and it was quite painful to watch - so I have to admit I ended up not watching a lot of races that year.
2006 was special because it was Schumi's final year (or so I thought at the time) and watching the 248 reel in Alonso's R26 toward the end was exciting, especially the final race of the season.I was hoping it would be a fairytale ending for Schumi so it was quite a painful moment there too.

I kind of lost interest in F1 in 2007 with Schumi gone, only watching sporadically and this persisted right until the end of 2009.
I had actually been watching Raikkonen during his Sauber days and thinking that I would support him when Schumi retired, the same way I was watching Schumi in his Benetton days, thinking I would support him when Senna retired (sadly it didn't quite happen that way) but for some reason this never really happened.

I'm actually quite disappointed I missed a lot of races during those years.
For that reason I'd love to go back to see these years, especially 2008 because of how close it was.
I was so surprised to see Jenson Button in a Brawn winning at the start of 2009 as well as the Red Bull's being right up there.
I was still mourning the loss of Schumi and didn't care much at the time for the newer generation like Vettel that was emerging so I missed more races than I watched once more.

What a shame, what an awesome season with the underdogs rising to the top!
I started watching every single race in 2010 again, not because Schumi had returned (although that was a plus) but because I had warmed to the new generation of drivers.

That was the year the technical side of F1 started to interest me (before that I didn't even know what a diffusor was!) - of course learning about the clever tricks the engineers and designers used to bend the rules took F1 to another level for me and turned my love of F1 into fanaticism!
I think last year was more exciting than this year, even though there have been more overtakes with the DRS.

There were some fantastic duels last year - the Turkish GP was the best of the year for me with Button overtaking Hamilton and Hamilton cleverly retaking the position almost immediately plus the collision between Webber and Vettel (I'll miss Turkey - it's a great track!).

This year has been less exciting with Vettel completely dominating but far from boring (apart from the Chinese GP, for which I slept thru most of it).
Everyone talks about how great the 90's were, and they were but I remember some boring seasons in the mid 90's.
I think that racing in the 00's and early 10's has been fantastic!!

Racing in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, was good, but the rules have IMO destroyed the racing, more overtaking, less battles, 2011 has been dull, 2010 was dull however the championship was close, 2009 was dull as button ran away with it at the beginning of the season, it wasnt that tight towards the end either. Bring back 2008 rules (without appetures)!!!

ha ha - I didn't mind them actually - it was quite interesting seeing all the weird little bits popping up all over the car, although I have to agree it was quite ugly, especially in Honda's case!
I still love the front wings from '08 - they made the cars look really cutting edge in terms of aero.
Just a reminder of what we're missing: Honda's ''beautiful'' dumbo wings!:

I thought they looked beautiful in terms of the curly bits, however, The cars look so clean and nice now, I say, 2011 cars, 2008 wings + 2008 diffuser!
