The lightest F1 car ever

Post

Does anyone know which is the lightest F1 car (excluding ballast) that ever being produced in F1 history? Since engine is a major load contributor, i would assume that the car will have to come from the peak of the turbo engine era.

Why do you say that?

The lightest engines are likely to be either late 90s early 2000's before Beryllium and other exotics were banned, or the current V8's(even discounting the use of exotic alloys). If it wasn't for regulation i'm almost certain that modern engines would be the lightest as they are currently overdesigend for the job.

Turbo engines tend to be more bulky than their N/A counterparts becuase they have to withstand much higher peak pressures. It's why a good proportion (if not all) of them used cast iron blocks.

The bests of 2005 V10's were around 90kg. So very light.
Plus frames were far more tighter in 2005 than in 1986...

I already have asked my bro about cars he work onto, the jaguar (2003 or 2004) weighs 470kg with fluids (except fuel), 450kg fully dry.

Is this the lightest F1 car ever developed?

How light do you want it to be?

Is 450kg not light enough?

They used to have a 500kg limit IIRC back in the days...

It is just to give you an order of idea of how many weighted a post 2000 V10 formula one. MP4/20, and Renault R25 must be ligther than that; their engines were 15kg lighter... So it is not impossible that they weighted 400kg or so..

I just read that regulation from 1961 to 1966 mandated a 450kg minimum weight.
60's could also be a good period to found the ligthest F1 car...

ps: found a paper reporting RA168E to weight 146kg. So no way 80's cars were lighter than 2000's ones.
I'll post it in a more appropriate topic since it describe all the engine.
