Castrol Rankings

Post

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80859 - linky link.

This seems like a brilliant idea to me, it'l be really interesting to see who is the "best driver in the world"

"The rankings analyse almost 50 global motorsport series, including Formula 1, NASCAR and WRC, to create a continuous measurement of driver talent.

The points are updated weekly and, using a unique Castrol Index Score to weight different categories, provides the first live ranking system that rates drivers for their performances over the previous 12 months."

It's great...but still only a best guess based on the weighting applied. For all JB's heroics he was still in the best car for much of the season...

The weighting between category is still arbitrary, and AFAIK it does not take into account of the strength of competition and or equipment level difference....

in the end, you can use stats to tell whatever you want...

If Button is leading(especially over Loeb) it is already flawed and useless.

I certainly believe Loeb is better than Button. Loeb is the fastest in the world at rallying and that's on at least 3 different surfaces. Where as Button was the fastest in F1 on 1 surface. I'd say flawed, but then it is apparently "very sophisticated"..

I can't even find Allan Mac Nish on their list! [-X (IMHO the best driver in the world)
Damn! they doesn't even know about Scotland! Check the nationality ranking if you don't belive me... A shame, when the event is backed by David Coulthard!

I guess whatever seriousness they pretend to, their ranking is pretty much flawed by the rating of the series. Apparently in their opinion being an average F1 driver (like Trulli-17th, Fisi-37th or Kovalainen-30th) is still way better than winning 8 times Le Mans (Tom Kristensen-56th) #-o

As usual with such ranking, it is total BS based on a biased opinion. But it is the first time it doesn't admit it and pretend to be the scientific truth... Shame.

Cross-disipline comparisons are idiotic!
That's like comparing Sergey Bubka, Javier Sotomayor, and Mike Powell!
They all jumped in field events :wtf:

You really want Elena Isinbaeva.

The first woman over five meters.
Loads of world records,
And according to the Cooper-Climax Duckhams Rankings (TM), much more fun to look at.

Re: Castrol Rankings

Just saw the Castrol rankings and it is indeed flawed, in the sense that it does not measure the 'capabilities' of a driver but his accomplished feats.

The very best driver in the world would NOT score well in this setup simply because it is a measure of the car/team/skill/luck, POS car/team, only by luck any success.
Look at how F. messed up Kimi, or BMW and Kubica a couple of times in Qualifying last year as an example.

No way is Nico Rosberg, Jarno Trulli, Mark Webber, Rubens B. or even probably Kimi, better than Alonso, NO WAY!

Lewis H. may be, but just, and then maybe not in a true even-even test, (Lewis was favored some amount by McL/Dennis, but hard to quantify). (Alonso was just to mention a single driver who is better than he is listed)

This is one reason why there really should be a series where we could actually see a 'Race of champions' so to speak, a true cross 'race' cultural (F1-Indy-Rally-Nascar-DTM-....) set of races with measured equal cars.

It likely would have to be in several car types, because any single car type would likely favor the current skills of 1 driver over another, maybe karts or some different car type. Hey, how about racing Diesel trucks! :) (Joke, no thanks!)

But the Castrol list is flawed and only partly legitimate effort but we all know some drivers really are better than others and the list is incorrect on this order. (Where's F. Massa in the top 20??)

Nice try Castrol but keep honing that algorithm!!!!

Re: Castrol Rankings

Can I just bring this topic back up and say I cannot for the life of me work out why Vettel is (and has been for a long time) the No.1.

His speed isn't in doubt but why does he do so well in the rankings despite so many DNF's, crashes and out-of-the-points finishes? How can he be better than those who have won more in the last 12months and dragged slower cars to higher finishes?

It does seem this system is flawed and I wish Autosport wasn't pushing it so much.

How the **** can Mark Webber be second in the Castrol Edge Rankings?
The speed of Ayrton Senna.
The mind of Alain Prost.
The dedication of Michael Schumacher.
The determination of Alex Zanardi.

>Castrol EDGE Index Score: Each driver is given a score depending on his qualifying position and his race result from each event that counts towards the Castrol EDGE Rankings. Additional points are given for fastest lap in the race, leading the race or rally, leading the most laps, finishing on the lead lap, most positions gained, and starting the event.

That lkely has a lot to do with it. He has made up a lot of places in the races, and set the most fastest laps.
