Would RTL'S signal get encrypted during a race in the UK?

Post

I installed a satellite at 19.2 east to pick up the german channel RTL in order to watch all of the races live next year because of the sky-bbc deal..I have now heard that RTL'S signal might be encrypted during the race..is this true?? I hope not after I have gone to all the bother..

if it is encrypted then german viewers will not be able to watch either , so sounds like a scare story ...why would RTL pay to show F1 if nobody can see it !

wouldn't it have been cheaper to go to all the races ...last time I looked satellites and their launches were serious money [ I knew what you meant really :)

RTL has SDTV and HDTV via satellite. The HD service is encrypted. The SD service should be FTA. The Austrian ORF1 is a lot more likely to be encrypted as is the Italian F1 feed. The other German F1 feed is Sky Germany. A subscription costs €29.90 per month and you can order it for a minimum period of 12 month. You get all races without interruption and a free hard disk satellite receiver that you can keep.

It would not be encrypted for viewers in Germany..but it probably will in the UK..

It's the exact satellite broadcasting the exact same signal... People in the south of england just happen to be able to pick it up. If it's not encrypted for them, it won't be encrypted in the UK either.

That is correct. The UK and Germany get exactly the same signal. I used to pick it up in Buckinghamshire with a 1.2m dish which was installed in the garden like the one seen here:

In actual fact you do not need such a big dish but it gives you plenty of reserve when the receptions gets degraded by thunderstorms and you do not want to risk being without a life signal.

60 cm gets astra19.2 [ astra1 as it used to be known ] signals just fine in eastern england , 80 cm would be better in the west one presumes

would be better to fit 80 cm everywhere though as this size is readily and cheaply available and would allow a bit for inclement weather as WB suggests

as all analogue transmissions from germany are due to finish in april I suppose transponder changes could be made but 80 cm is still likely to do the job

I wasn't talking about the analogue signal, but the digital unencrypted SD signal. That is not likely to change at all. As you say it may be shifted to another transponder when they shut down the analogue signals on May 1st this year, but that is easily fixed by a new frequency search. Every digital receiver has such a function.

It should be noted that there is a discussion since 2008 to encrypt the SD signal as well. RTL would like to do it but it would mean that they would loose millions of customers who are not prepared to pay for updating their digital FTA equipment and for the monthly smart card fee of €3.5. In my view the encryption will not happen, but there are no guarantees.

no problem to retune ...that wasn't my point ; different transponders have different footprints , and it is possible that , after a post analogue re-shuffle , this transmission ends up on a transponder which gives a weaker signal to the UK

The Italian Rai feed is encrypted but with a Tivu-sat decoder or smartcard you could watch it for FREE
It's a service meant for DVB-T-less zones here

You only need the right decoder or smartcard, i'm not so sure, and point to Eutelsat 13° Est
