How will the new exhaust regs affect wake

Post

Apologies in advance if this really should be in Aero - newbie here.

Quote from Gary Anderson:
“The exhaust acts like a compressor,” says Anderson. “It moves the air quite effectively, increasing the air speed, and that gives more downforce. The return will be small, but that’s always the case because the regs are so tight.”

Being a mere mortal I had not considered that this was the actual effect and the reason for blowing the rear wing.

How will this affect the wake of the car - surely it's a bad thing for following cars?

There is more to wing bloeing than just that. If you accelerate the wing tip vortices you should stretch them and get an higher intensity suction from them.

bad for the follower then.. same probelms airplanes have in busy airports

The wake of a Formula 1 car is predominantly dominated by the expansion zones following the diffuser and the Rear wing. The greater pressure differential over these devices, the more energetic the vorticies formed.

Therefore removing the EBD will reduce diffuser efficiency and reduce the energy in the voritcies following the car.

So in summary the wake behind the 2012 cars should in theory be less 'disturbed' (contain vorticies of lesser energy) than those of the 2011 cars

EDIT: A picture to help demonstrate the vorticies

I've wondered if the engineers consider f'ing up the airflow behind them to disadvantage a following car, especially with the 2012 regs.

you can't really do that without harming your own cars performance.

So what's the consensus? Instinctively I don't think this will be great for following cars - surely blowing higher up and removing a major source of ground effects will have an effect on this?

Exhaust blowing will have a negligible effect on the aero performance of a trailing car. Simple as that.

Blowing of the rear wing would simply add more expanding air into the expansion zone behind the rear wing and the wake will still have the same characteristics as without exhaust blowing.

Could go into more specifics in how air flows around a F1 car and why following in another cars wake is detrimental to its performance but i don't think its necessary
