McLaren 'High' Nose

Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

Has McLaren messed up by not having a stepped nose?

Yes, they have missed the boat. They will probably need to catch up.

No, there is nothing wrong with their nose. The other teams may copy it.

With a mandate chassis height, how can they be only 30mm lower thatn the others?
I did some calulation on McLaren vs Ferrari suspension mounting points, McLaren one were 8cm lower than the Ferrari one.

I think just because there are maximum heights set, doesnt mean that you have to desing something as close to those limits as possible, a la the stepped noses.

The design of the nose impacts airflow over the rest of the car, so its impossible to compare noses without understanding how the rest of the car works. With McLaren having designed cars with low noses for the last few year I think they will have a good understanding of what they are doing.

With all the computing power and wind tunnel time the teams have, there is just too little agreement on what the nose should look like. The logical conclusion is that there is no ideal choice at this time when the nose is viewed in isolation.

I think they have lost the plot. Frankly I see them not doing any better than what Mercedes where last season. Things have changed. There is no DD & certainly no EBD. Every other team has gone for a stepped NOSE.

Every team. Even going with ugly designs & for sure they all have done R & D with lower noses & more smooth & more beautiful like Mclaren have. Newey,Ferrari,Lotus & Mercedes have the budget to do so.

I find it no straight coincidence. As Newey said this is the ONLY EFFICIENT Solution however ugly it is. This nose will turn our like SWB did for Mercedes. See you my dear fanboys. I am calling it now. MARK my post. My words will come true.

People, you've mixed min and max height regulations.

The maximum height of the survival cell between the lines A-A and B-B is 625mm above the reference plane.

The minimum height of the survival cell between the lines B-B and C-C is 550mm.

So, car can have fully horizontal chassis and nose at 550mm and no stepped nose, or B-B at 625 which is max. but dropping towards front with A-A at 550, and again no stepped nose. That is how Mclaren has done it. Their chassis has continuous declination towards front end, and it continues at same angle further down the nose.

Are you willing to make this more interesting? I seem to remember a certain esteemed member promising to eat his balaclava over a similarly bullish prediction ;)

I will eat my baclava if Williams doesn't win both championships!

am i right in saying that the step nose would be the point of most downward pressure and the mclaren nose having more downward pressure being exerted at the front??
if this is the case would mclaren not be more beneficial by having more grip on the front end? or does the step nose put pressure closer to the middle of the car thus producing a more equal balance between front and back down force?
i dont know much about areo so if i sound like i have just smoked crack i apologise

Your right about a low nose in itself producing more downforce than a raised nose. In fact, the old conventional low noses of the 80s and early 90s produce more downforce than the noses now.

However we got rid of those noses and went to raised ones because it was realised you can maximise the air flow under the nose that goes to the sidepods, floor, bargebaords and helps the front wing work better. There is more downforce to be had in this and less drag.

What we have seen last year by very high noses is just an attempt to amplify the above. McLaren have a complicated splitter under the nose and have decided to keep with a lower profile arrangement. You can't just wack a new nose onto a car because everyone else has one, the airflow under the nose is tuned in with the aero package of the rest of the car. And why should McLaren change it now, with those horrific bumps appearing on the rest of the field's cars :?: :D

On step noses, no they dont really move around the aero balance they are just a neccesity for teams to continue to run high noses in spite of regulations trying to stop them.

I understand that a lot of downforce can be made my making the nose raised as high as possible, but McLaren haven't had any super high noses lately. The MP4-24/5/6 all had lower noses and they worked just fine.

They use the snow plow in an attempt to get a similar flow quality to that of a high nose.
