1976 F1 performance/specs?

Post

Hi,

I'm looking for any data i can find regarding the performance of 1976 or similar F1 cars. All I've managed to find is lap times which is ok but I'm looking more for stuff along the lines of telemetry of any kind, maybe from the historic grand prix? Doesn't have to be exact I'm just trying to figure out some rough performance levels for cars of that era.

thanks!

haha telemetry in 1976 ...No ways!
As I understand Copersucar was one of the firat teams to carry a Computer to the tracks ....incidently that was 1976.Those were the days when laptimes were measured with manual stopwatches and Heuer came up with the first laptiming system methinks.

I may not be of full help, but here's what I have:
Engines:

3.0 Litre Normally Aspirated
1.5 Litre Supercharged or Turbocharged
Maximum 12 Cylinders
575 Kg Minimum Weight
An article about Ferrari 312T which raced that year - http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/fer312t.htm
More technical details on that car here - http://www.connectingrod.it/HistoricalR ... a_eng.html

In the last F1 race on the Nordschleife 1976, James Hunt was on pole with 7:06.5, though Niki Lauda did 6:58.6 in 1975.

In 1983, Stefan Bellof lapped a Porsche 956 Group C car in 6:25.91 and in 2011 a street-legal Dodge Viper did 7:12.13.

don't forget to factor in any changes in track layouts if you start to compare. and also don't forget to take the tracks location into account, kyalami in particular really hurt the cars performance due to altitude, for top speed you'd probably be best looking at the french grand prix at paul ricard due to the length of the straight.

you've possibly picked the best time to find out this information, assuming you're not already working with / for ron howard, it may be worth contacting him as he's doing a lot of research for his film of the 76 season

Arguably, he must have had a set of balls, or two, going through the carousel without lifting.

If you're suggesting it's not true, then prepare to eat humble pie. Of course, it wasn't a standard production road car, but the time still stands. There's video on YouTube of the previous 7:22 run too. Of course, it's important to understand that there are various timing methods used for Nurburgring records; full lap prior to GP track (6:11), full lap minus pitlane (6:48), bridge to gantry, Nordschleife + GP track, etc. Times can differ by minutes, depending on which incarnation.

And don't take out weather conditions, types of tires, etc. It is something a lot of companies are braging about now, but it really isn't good for comparison.

At the end of the day;

Did or did not someone take a Dodge Viper around the Nordschleifse faster than Niki Lauda did in 1976 or not?

A similar time, but a different circuit. They managed 7:12 from pit exit to pit entrance. In 1976, the circuit was 2km longer than this "lap" the Viper did, the extra section having been lost when the GP track was built. Wikipedia explains the various iterations well.
