No richard, this driver was to become WDC some years later.

Which was the car and engine he joked about?

ok, be kind, my first attempt :)
Who hired, and who was it they hired for the their tenacity rather than their (up to that point) mediocre results? The same pairing had a falling out some years later which was a shock to many at the time.

There were some strange pairings, but perhaps Mark Blundell and Martin Brundle driving for Cyril de Rouvre's Ligier team in 1993 was the most bizarre?

In this case the paring was management (of some description) and driver

- I'm being cryptic trying not to give the game away!!
Funnily though I was going to do a question on Blundell/Brundle...

I think you have to give a few more hints here.

Sure thing! I'll also rephrase the question here for simplicity:

Ok so I want:
The name of the person who hired a driver for his determination more than results.
The name of the driver they hired.
The driver's results prior to their hiring at the team weren't very illustrious (from multiple formulas not just F1).

Said driver became successful with the team but was fired and moved on to an uncompetitive team, however, he still secured a podium, narrowly missing out on a win. The following year he switched teams again where he managed to secure his final race win.

I could think of about 17 drivers like that, I think you have to give the question a little more spin, newbie.

Ok: The driver was only the 2nd person in F1 history to drive with a special number. He also managed to drive with that number on 2 occasions, the only man to do so. That should narrow it down.

Correct ;) Your go!
The boss was Frank Williams and his words were, typically frank: he hired him because he was a tough so and so (paraphrased).
Final win was with Jordan.

I'll take a guess at Jacques Villeneuve, his first car was a bit of all right :)
Pole and fastest lap and second on his début.
