What differentiates the Red Bull car from the rest?

Post

Hi there,
I am doing an important review on Red Bull and was wondering whether someone could provide me an insight as to what separates the Red Bull car from the rest of the grid? What is the technical aspect of the car that separates it?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jamie

Last year? About half a second per lap.

This year? Ask again after Sunday.

Red Bull car is the only car designed using paper, pencil and drawing table. All other cars are designed on computers.

So, if Newey is left-handed, why is he using a right-handed drafting machine?

refinement,...no one technical thing to it, its just refinement in everything

Newey perhaps draft's idea's but of course the car is designed on a computer, it's the only realistic way. Interestingly, this is the team that pioneered CAD too, not RedBull, but Stewart Racing.

What's that, Stewart Grand Prix made their debut in 1997, many years after the introduction of CAD in F1?

Clarity of purpose and philosophy from the Technical Director on down and most importantly, and perhaps the real secret, they've refined absolutely every single area of the car as far as they can get it. If weight or space can be saved then it is and I think that means that when they put a silver bullet on the car, whether it be the exhaust shenanigans or anything else, the groundwork they've done then magnifies it several times. That's where their big advantage seems to come from.

It must be a a fun and creative place to work in that team, but goodness, everyone must get pushed very hard. If you get set a task that seems impossible then you must come through otherwise the car probably won't work.

They have a very capable technical director who is allowed to just get one with being technical. One of the reasons given for Newey leaving McLaren was that he struggled with the corporate ethos of the place. Happy to have the resources but felt confined and unable to do what he felt needed to be done to get the last n'th right.

RedBull have just let him do his thing with less of the "we must wi everything yesterday" philosophy of the big/established teams. After all, RBR weren't expected to win until they, um actually started to win...

I believe switching from Ferrari to the more fuel efficient Renault engine is a big part of their success and the reason why others are struggling to catch up with them. thanks to the regulation to freeze engine development.

I'm sure I read that the Renault torque band suited the RB philosophy better as well... sadly I can't find corroborating articles at the mo.

I cannot begin to xplain how happy this image makes me, not making any other comparisons whatsoever, this is xactly the way I work before handing over the layout to my CAD-operators for detailing and documentation work.

To many people, CAD-literacy is greatly misunderstood, it's just a tool, nothing more or less, the design is done in your head and to people like Adrian Newey and John Barnard, this is better conveyed to image by pencil and fingertip-feel.
