Hamilton running out of fuel in Canada 2010 - Reprimand and a fine.
Alonso running out of fuel in Nurburgring 2011 - Nothing.
Hamilton running out of fuel in Spain 2012 - Disqualification.

Don't 'they' rig things to keep the championship open for as long as possible ?

Perhaps LH should see this as a vote of confidence in his potential this year !

The real ownership of F1 is via commercial rights (debt to German banks?), the real profit is in the TV spot market, which picks up when the championship is open.

Didn't the 1983 championship go to a team (owner by Mr Ecclestone) that was proven by due process to have used illegal fuel, but escaped any penalty ?

If it was illegal then surely Alonso in Nurburgring 2011 should also have gotten a reprimand and a fine.

Or did they change the rule AFTER they gave Hamilton a fine and reprimand?
"Following a directive issued at the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix, after Lewis Hamilton and McLaren were given a reprimand and a $10,000 fine for stopping deliberately on a slowing down lap after qualifying to save fuel, the FIA has made it clear that only genuine technical problems would be acceptable."
Don't know what happened to Alonso in 2011, but it probably was genuine technical problem.

Like it would hit the limiter, back off a little, hit again, back off a little and keep doing it till the braking zone.

Usually it's just straight noise till the end of the straight when cars hit the limiter but it was fluxuating on both McLarens.
Yes, I notice that too, it was in the final lap replay. But I don't know what it should be if a feature or bug.

I didn't notice that, but after reading Grizzle's brief description I'd say it was caused by bumpy pit straight...

"The Stewards determine that this is a breach of Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations and the Competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the Qualifying Session. The Competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid."

The rules says whats the punishment.
31.6
In the event of a driving infringement during any practice session the Stewards may drop the driver such number of grid positions as they consider appropriate. Unless it is completely clear that a driver committed a driving infringement any such incident will normally be investigated after the relevant session. Where appropriate, regard will also be given to the provisions of Article 18.1.
31.7
Any driver taking part in any practice session who, in the opinion of the stewards, stops unnecessarily on the circuit or unnecessarily impedes another driver shall be subject to the penalties referred to in Article 31.6.
So it is a stewards decision. They could have decided another sanction if they wanted.

They could have just given them a 5 place grid-spot for crying out loud.

Last comment from the comments section:
"Why do we just do things without thinking about them?" (the words of Ron Dennis upset at incompetance in the pit lane...coincidence?) That's what I've been wondering about McLaren for a long time, some terrible strategy calls this year, and even their correct ones are poorly executed, and that's coming from a Macca fan.

Note how this comment is a year old.

The McLaren drivers are world class, but the people behind them are fast becoming the historically notable village idiot.

Wow, I feel really bad for Hamilton. I don't think I've seen a year in which a team screws his driver much more than this this. That's just incompetence. My question since I don't know the article rules is, wouldn't it be correct to drop to 10th ?

They can choose whatever penalty they want because the words "as they consider appropriate" is one massive grey zone.

so essentially you can have two drivers breaking exactly the same rule but the penalty could be like night and day between the two.
