Exhaust going into the airbox

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Exhaust going into the airbox

Post

I was just thinking, assuming that all iterations of the exhaust blown diffuser (including the ones being tried this season) are banned. Could they start pointing the exhaust so that a part of the hot gases go directly into the airbox of a following car when it is at a particular distance behind?
This would not only reduce the efficiency of that engine that has now to take in air at higher temp.but also increase wear and reduce life coz of the dirty air going in. would make overtaking, or even following much more difficult.

That would then render the current rule set useless in relation to overtaking and would very quickly be banned.

The cars are also travelling pretty quick with air continually flowing over the body, so the exhausts would probably have to stick out like a truck exhaust to even remotely hinder the car behind

would it? hmmm.... well it will have some effect out of low speed corners i think (cars are bunched up and speeds are low enough not to spread the exhaust out)
Hey could this be used to cook up and shorten the life of the front tyres? considering how sensitive these tyres are to the air temp?
shoot this possibility down and i'll swear i'll maintain my brain farts to publicly accepted level in future

This hot gas is not hot air (ingestion by a car behind will rather reduce its power due to lack of Oxygen), but .........

It's Nitrogen, Water vapour, Carbon Dioxide and rather a lot of Carbon Monoxide (your lovely rich mixture for max power can't do anything else) !
All that fuel burnt with only about 90% of the air needed for complete combustion !

So, after 100 min at Monaco, what would sampling of driver's blood tell us ?

point taken.... though i should say i have stood for an hour and a half on the downwind side of these cars when they raced around turn 2 and 3 in the Indian GP and i didn't smell the typical petrol car exhaust smell (ok i know CO is odourless, so don't know about that... but hey... no one died of CO poisoning so....)... which considering their super high fuel consumption speaks a lot about their efficiency....
so in short.... i think this'd be banned (if anyone ever tried it in the first place) but not with health concerns
