For the season 81 there was another rule change apart from the minimum 6cm ground clearance at the instigation of
a team.

Which team was supposed to develop a special design which should be prohibeted by this rule change although this was tested by somebody else.

Name the three teams.

Edit: As I´m off for the weekend and unable to reply until sunday, I leave it open to anybody who thinks to have given the right answer to put a new question up.

After the failure of the "wingless" Lotus 80, the rumor was that Team Lotus was building a car with no suspension at all.

The Team Williams tested a FW07 without suspension in December 1980 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LFmWd2JkC8

The Scuderia Ferrari asked then the FiA to specify in the 1981 reg than a F-1 must have a suspension.

And that was the starting point of a very very big mess...

BTW who was the last GP winner with sliding skirts ?

whats a sliding skirt? a skirt that´s rubbing on the ground or a skirt that is sliding up and down in its channel?
I understand that from 81 the bottom had to be flat .in consequence the teams ran solid suspension.
In 1982 this was reversed and skirts were reintroduced but the skirts had to be fixed so still no suspension movement...So it would be 1982 ? that would be Michele Alboreto then ,asuming the Tyrrell had skirts ..

and James Hunts Helmet?

No, I mean real good old sliding skirt (= skirt that is sliding up and down in its channel) like the one we see at the right bottom or the one that was removed in the short video "Williams tests a no-suspension F1 car to improve its ground effect ".

Image

1981

Sliding skirts banned and 6cm ground clearance regulations enforced, these were sidestepped by Brabham using a hydro-pneumatic chassis lowering ploy, which was subsequently copied by all. Suspension travel minimised to maintain consistent download. Flexi skirts were used instead.

1983

New flat-bottomed regulations applied, virtually banning ground effects and under wing profiles between the complete wheels.

So again, who was the last GP winner with sliding skirts ? And it's true it's not Alan Jones at Watkins Glen in 1980.

Of course, but that race was never recognized as a "GP", which was the question here?

Well done, marcush

This race was originally Round 1 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, but was later deemed a non-championship race following the FISA/FOCA war due to the teams running sliding skirts after they were banned and therefore did not conform to the regulations.

It's was really a F-1 race with 1980 regs and Carlos Reutemann is for ever winner (with sliding skirt) of the South African GP in 1981 even if it's not reconized today as a FiA World Championship event.

This race is not listed in any official f1 statistics, as mentioned by x and it was not run under f1 regulations.
