Championship copies

Post

Over the past few years Red Bull have just evolved there car from one season to the next, how ever the concept can be linked their 2009 car in some form or the other.

RBR car is a complex package, but is it so difficult for any other team (say caterham, marrusia, force india etc.) to copy their current car inch to inch?
Is it not allowed under the regulations or just not possible for other engineers to package their cars to the RB8?

It is understandable that some of the tricks such as wing flexing cannot be copied, however majority of the aero could be made to work in an inch to inch copy. Mechanical and weight distribution setup could be worked out over a few months, but with rules remaining the same for the next few years there could be some reward in making a copy rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

Different engines have different cooling and fuel requirements. Otherwise, it would be possible, especially since the rules are so restricted that even weight distribution is standard.

We're likely to see 22 mostly identical cars in 2014, because teams will likely have converged on optimum aerodynamic solutions by then, and the regulations governing the new V6 produce a basically standard powerplant, e.g. blocks will be identical.

And just how would a team get an accurate digital/CAD representation of an RBR car? The body work, the suspension topology, everything that's hidden away, etc etc.

Not to mention that "inch to inch" is not nearly good enough. Millimeter to millimeter maybe.
Grip is a four letter word. All opinions are my own and not those of current or previous employers.

Eh, neither an "inch by inch" nor a "millimeter by millimeter" copy of a component is required to copy that component's performance, which is the whole idea anyway. It happens every year. Pull rods, exhausts, wing profiles, etc. All a team needs is budget and know-how.

Scanning 3d is no difficult job anymore.

How do you propose they get Red Bull to keep the RB9 still long enough to commit a laser scan at that sort of range?
