Hands down the Sauber is the dark horse this year. What a stellar car. Seriously. Well done Peter. Absolutely outstanding work.

I really hope that car throws a gigantic monkey wrench into the titanic battle we are about to experience in 2013. =D> :D =D>
...Yep agree fully.....love the design......the car looks in harmony and hopefully it can challenge at the front.....they certainly have a young star in the Hulk to throw a "gigantic monkey wrench" into the wdc battle...Well done Sauber =D> =D> =D>

If we took the exhausts and the sidepods as 2 separate components, the exhausts aren't exactly "mature" yet, It looks more like mclarens first iteration of last year and we all know where that ended up. Great looking sidepods for sure but maybe compromising exhaust philosophy?

I think with this type of rear wing design they can stall a little bigger portion of rear wing than Lotus, assuming it works in the same way
I think you're in the ballpark here.

I think...

Teams would use the biggest, most downforce-producing rear wings allowed by the rules were it not for the huge drag penalty they bring at higher speeds. A passive DRS - still upset that the term "VD" didn't catch on, by the way - will allow teams to run larger wings at higher angles of attack than would otherwise possible, because the system "stalls" the wing at and beyond the speed in which it becomes a hindrance to performance instead of an enhancement, i.e. along straights and through high-speed turns where the diffuser alone provides sufficient downforce. I believe the new Sauber wing, coupled with passive DRS, is an example of this.

If it works, the only remaining factor limiting the size and AoA of rear wings, aside from the rules, will be their ability to quickly shed and regain downforce when "normal" DRS is deployed. Those events need to occur as quickly as possible to avoid upsetting the balance of the car. I think that's probably why this new wing resembles some of the low-downforce designs from the old formula.

You beat me to it! That's exactly the reason for the shape of the wing!

Does make sense that these DRD systems are only powerful enough to blow the middle parts of the wings as seen by the Lotus flo vis. So they can be more aggressive in that area.

quick question as i'm becoming a little unsure now about the purpose of the DRD. Will Sauber (to keep it on topic 8) ) be stalling the rear wing with ducts, or is it to open the DRS flap itself?

I thought after seeing Lotus last year it was purely to open the DRS flap, but after some suggestions about teams stalling the beam wing instead of the RW with DRD I'm confused....

EDIT: @Huntresa - hmm, i feel very silly now :} i thought they were using air activation at certain speeds to open DRS, ooops, the more i think about the more silly it seems. So in reference to the position of Sauber's DRD, it will simply 'blow' the RW from the stem we see under it?

No team uses stuff connected to the rw to open drs, they use the endplates via hydralics

Exactly my thoughts.

What is the reasoning behind the larger (much larger) DRS activation lever casing? Do they expect to pipe in air through that piece and (what looks like) blow the underside of the DRS flap?

Does the DRD already have a nick name? On some of the pictures it looks like "elephant nose"
