Renault RS21 2001

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

I have heard that it had some innovations concerning valves. What was it exactly, does anybody know?

Dunno about that, i have a pic on an old hard drive and it pretty much looked like a high port, pent roof, four valve head with finger tappets. Admittedly, the photo was very grainy.
I think the innovation lay in the 111 degree engine block, and the headaches they had to overcome to balance the motor.
The NSR500 two stroke had a 111 degree block angle, and an odd firing pattern V4, they cant have been two shared journal v twins otherwise the crankcase gases could not positively displace the cylinder for filling. It had 3 carburettors.

That can of worms requires a higher level design theory beyond my current understanding.

canted/compound angle valves would be my guess
also the v angle would force very uneven spacing of crankshaft (inertial) loadings, bad news

They looked at using solenoid activated valves instead of pneumatic. They believed they could get well over 20,000 RPM.

such valve actuation would be apparent in a photo of the engine ?

the valves are not the limiting factor for rpm anyway ?
did this engine have a shorter stroke than existing Renault engines ?
